Chapter One

June 8th

FIONA LOUISE BALTAZAR

"Good Morning!" I greeted the lady at the front desk while smiling.

"Good Mornin'." She greeted me back. "Here for attendance?"

"Yep, as always." I replied.

"Name?" She asked me. Kahit na kasi I've been here ever since ninth grade (basically, I've been here for four years now since I'm on twelfth grade already), maraming students and staffs ang nagde-declare ng attendance nila sa kanya. Every day of every year, to be exact. Kaya I'm cool na hindi nya alam ang name ko.

"Baltazar, Fiona Louise." I replied.

"What grade?" The woman asked. She didn't ask that question for the first three years I've been here, huh? She just normally ask our names then pagnahanap at na markahan na niya yung name namin as present, yun na yun. Done.

"Huh?" That was the first sound that came out of my mouth. "Twelve. Twelfth grade."

"Whose class? Oh wait, I forgot - first day nga pala ngayon." She said. After a while, she said: "Found you - Baltazar, Fiona Louise. Mrs. Rosales's class. Classroom Agate IV. Got it?"

"Mrs. Rosales's class. Agate IV." I recited. "Got it. 'Yan na po ba yung sasabihin namin for attendance from now on?" I asked.

"Yeah - it's either your name and your homeroom's name or your name and your adviser's name. Bago na kasi method ngayon. Finally!" She replied while smiling. "It makes my job so much easier, like a hundred times easier."

I laugh, then I bid her farewell before I went outside the office.

"Good luck!" She shouted after me before the door finally closes.

Hopefully, I won't need that good luck today.

"So bago na pala yung way ng pag-dedeclare ng attendance, huh?" I said kay Fiona pagkasirado na pagkasirado ko ng pinto ng main office. Katatapos ko lang magdeclare ng attendance ko dun sa lady.

"Uh-huh," she said while nodding. "What class are you in?"

Unting background lang sa friendship namin ni Fiona: We met each other back when we were still in ninth grade. I can still recall sa English class kami nagkakilala. Ever since we met, once lang kami nag-share ng homeroom. Sana maging twice na 'yun this school year.

"Kay Mrs. Cruz. Bixbite III."

"Aish, badtrip! Hindi tayo parehas ng homeroom!" She complained.

"Ay ganun?" I said. "Sino adviser mo, then?"

"Si Mrs. Rosales. Agate IV." Well my wish was not heard then, but that's fine.

I nodded. "Okay lang 'yan. Baka malay mo magkakasama tayo sa ilang subjects."

"Sana nga. Pero iba pa rin pag-same tayo ng homeroom. Katulad last year."

"I agree," I replied. "Unfortunately, 'yun na pala ang first and last na magkakasama tayo sa iisang homeroom."

"I know," she said, sadly. "Ano? Halika na, pasok na tayo. Baka malate pa tayo eh." Exaggeration naman 'to si Fiona, ang aga-aga pa oh!

Aalis na sana kaming dalawa sa kinaka-tayuhan namin sa harapan ng Moonstone - dito sa may stairs, to be exact - when I remembered something. "I almost forgot. Nagpapahintay nga pala sila Curt at yung friend niyang si Asher!"
