The Three Month Rule

They say to show one's true self,
It takes three months or more.
They can be the opposite,
Of the one you met before.
Projecting images of themselves,
That don't even exist.
When that image goes away...
You wonder what else you might have missed.

His face tempted me.
His energy was inviting.
His words were smooth,
His conversation was enticing.
Suddenly he changed,
And I was left to blame.
For my poor dating choices,
But when I chose him...
He wasn't the same.

The image he had shown,
soon disappeared.
Projecting insecurities in our relationship,
While repressing his fears.

It felt like I was lied to, I felt betrayed.
This love had been my safe space,
And he was playing charades.
When he would let down his mask,
I admit I was swayed.
If only I knew which one was the truth...
Maybe I would've stayed.

Maybe he repressed what he couldn't heal,
Maybe the love for him was real...
And it was for me too,
But he never let me in...
There wasn't much I could do.
