xiii. bear meat

marley sighed as crystal and misty sang together as everyone waited for shauna to come in with the bear meat 

"thank god,  cause im tired of starling soup" akilah mumbled as she stood up, shauna came in and put the meat down on the table but she looked angry 

"so who's the thief?" shauna asked sternly 

"someone stole some bear meat from the shed, i guess they think they deserve more than the rest of us which...at this point is pretty fucked" shauna spat angrily 

"if anybody, im the one who should be taking some more, except im not because im not the fucking worse..."

"so which one of you is?" shauna asked again, everyone staying silent again and shauna just chuckled in disbelief 

"okay, right, whatever"

"it was probably him, he thinks hes so much better than us" mari whispered to akilah as coach scott walked by them 

"i didnt take the fuck meat, okay? and in case you forgot, not exactly nimble in the snow" coach said motioning to his crutches before turning back around and continuing on, until he turned around one more time 

"but you know what? if it had been me, what exactly would you do about it? would you eat me?" coach asked everyone and mari stood up and began walking toward him but nat quickly put her hands up 

"lets all chill, you guys! theres just no way that coach would ever-" mari cut off nat 

"this is all because of you, you know?" 

"excuse me?" 

"why we dont have any meat, lottie tries to bless you for the hunt, but half the time you're MIA, or when you do show up its like you're practically holding your nose" mari spat 

"are you joking? you actually think thats why we cant find any game? because of me?" nat asked in disbelief, pointing at herself 

"im the only one thats even trying, me and ethan, while the rest of you guys are just fucking sitting on your asses-" marley quickly balled up her fist, lottie noticed though and began rubbing the girls head (that was on her chest) and instantly making her loosen her fists

"if there isnt any game, then how did lottie get the birds?" mari asked and lottie stopped rubbing marley's head, turning to mari 

"lottie didnt get the birds, they flew into the cabin" tai said 

"because she told them to" mari said and marley lifted her head off of lottie's chest 

"what the fuck are you talking about?" marley asked but before mari could answer her, akilah spoke up 

"it did happen when the blood dripped on the symbol that she made" akilah said and marley looked at lottie, confusion all over her face 

"we're still not really sure thats why" shauna said and coach butted in 

"yeah, you see, thats what we call a coincidence, okay? those birds were just- fucking confused, or, they had a disease or something" he said while shaking his head and misty shook her head
