The reason why Masaru's mom isn't there is because when he was born, she didn't like that he had dark skin (I'm assuming that his dad also has dark skin), she wanted a kid who had a complexion like Kotoko's, so she spent the first part of his life yelling at him, calling him names, making fun of his skin until she just left one day and started a new life with another family. This must have hurt Masaru's dad a lot, thus starting his drinking problem, along with blaming Masaru, as for why his mom left him.
