The worst part about flying, is knowing you'll have to drop soon.  Haly's Circus is known around the world for various acts.  But none will be as popular as the Flying Grayson's.  The long line of acrobats were notorious for their stunts others were to timid to temp.  The Grayson's knew how to fly.  They understood the rules of gravity and challenged it to the extreme.  So it was all of a surprise when they fell.

No one remembers that night like how young Richard "Dick" Grayson does.

The nauseating lights that gleamed down on his parents as he watched them fall, fall, fall down.

The gasps from the crowd when they'd realized what had happened.  The noise that was expelled from their bones cracking.

If Richard was performing with his parents that night, he too would've fallen.  Instead, fate decided that they'd rather the boy see his parents die in front of him.  Like the laughing devils they are.

On his worst nights, the young Robin can still recall the expressions that painted their faces in horror.  The sadness upon realization that they too, have been punished for disobeying gravity.  That, they'd never be able to able to experience the freedom of flight again.  Be able to smell the buttery popcorn or burnt circus peanuts that littered their lives.  That the pair would never be able to hold their little robin ever again.  That they'd never be able to comfort him, "It's not your fault."

Haly had adopted that kid that horrible night.  He didn't change how he treated the child.  In fact, he'd already viewed the young Grayson like he did all his performers.  Like family.  However even he couldn't replace his parents.  No one could.  No one else in the world could fly like he can.  No one else was as free from gravity.

So instead of settling Richard down with a cup of hot chocolate, a book and a lullaby; he instead let the kid fly.

He let him fly till he broke down.  Till his arms decided they had enough and were making weird creaky sounds. (None as bad as his parents bones he'd often justify.)

Dick Grayson carried on the legacy his parents downed upon him.  And he did it with pride.

On nights when it weren't so bad, he'd bring the whole circus up.  On the train you could hear his laughter travel down the different cars, drawing the attention of other performers.  Even at night, light foot steps could be traced back to him.  Because a Grayson cannot stay still.  They need to be constantly challenging gravity.  He needs to.

During performances, Grayson's act if the most anticipated.  Crowds stand sprouting their "ooh's" and "ahh's".  Clapping and cheering for the Boy Wonder who can fly.

Boy Wonder.  That's what they dubbed him.

The last Flying Grayson.  They'd whisper behind him.

A kid who'll get what's coming for him, if he keeps teasing gravity.  They'd threaten him.

Overall, Dick was happy to be eating cheap hot dogs and handing out balloons.  It was the only life he'd known after all.  He likes the rockity train cars.  The smell of thick face paint.  The sound of children's laughter.

But most of all.  He likes the attention he gets from flying.  The thought that all of the crowd can see the a Grayson perform his families legacy.

And that's all he needed.  That's all he could ask for.  What more did he need?
