Summary:
James shoved him back, just slightly, and gritted his teeth, keeping his fists clenched at his side.

"Regulus, I said shut the fuck up!" Regulus just kept taunting him, teasing a smile onto his lips. James raked his eyes over his white teeth and pouty pink lips and his stomach flipped. The thought crossed his mind that Regulus would be nice to kiss, what with his girly lips and all, at the same time he thought about purpling the pale skin around his eyes.

"What, are you going to make me?" Suddenly, James' mind was made up.

James slipped away from the rest of the Marauders right after lunch, making some excuse about meeting with McGonagall about Quidditch during his free period and then hurriedly taking one of the many secluded shortcuts to the dungeons to begin his first lesson of Potions tutoring.

He hadn't told the others he had been struggling with the subject, not wanting to inflate Sirius' ego even more than it already was by being better at him in another subject. It was enough that he'd beaten him in Charms and Moony had beaten him in Transfiguration.
Besides, he had a reputation to uphold.

He also had to be good at Potions if he was going to ever convince Lily to go out with him. He had to prove he was as smart and capable as he claimed to be. What would she think if James Potter was the resident imbecile who couldn't even brew a simple sleeping draught properly?

He didn't even know who was going to be tutoring him for the next month and that thought alone made him feel a bit dizzy. He had already prayed a few times that it wouldn't be Snape who walked into the classroom to make him understand why the properties of flobberworm mucus made them the perfect base ingredient for the potion.

He slinked down the last couple of stairs and ended up, luckily, behind the tapestry right outside of Professor Slughorn's office, pushing aside the dusty fabric and trying to dust the cobwebs from his robes, unsuccessfully. He ran a hand through his unruly hair, trying to make it lie down flat in the back, but it was no use and he quickly gave up. As he leaned against the wall, waiting for Slughorn to return from the Great Hall, he began to hear footsteps and voices approaching from the stairs and he almost dipped back behind the tapestry. He didn't want to interact with more of the Slytherins than necessary.

He leaned his head down, looking at the scuff marks on his white trainers. He'd only had them for a few months but they looked like he'd worn them for years, and he suspected that had something to do with Sirius borrowing them more frequently. He'd have to tell him off for that later. He leaned against the stone wall, arms crossed over his chest, and listened to the voices getting closer.

"Well, of course, I don't want to help the stupid blood traitor, but Sluggy said that if I didn't he would have to owl Mother, and you know how that would go. I'd be off Quidditch quicker than you could say-" The voice stopped short and James' head snapped up to find Regulus Black staring at him with nothing short of contempt. James cleared his throat.
