the moment you stepped into the boba shop, you were greeted with a long line that was near the door. the boba shop was a relatively popular one among the students (even the people who don't go to your school loved it as well); you moved from the back of the line and scanned over the shop looking for your best friend who was now sporting a black-haired look. when your eyes landed on her, you were quick to make your way over to the seat. seeing how she already had two drinks in front of her, the one she always ordered, a taro bubble tea with your regular jasmine milk tea.
you sat in the chair in front of her as you placed your phone face down on the table. when you look up at yunjin, she is staring at her phone with a deep frown on her face, but before you can even ask if she is okay, she is already looking at you as if she is about to cry. your eyes widen as your natural instinct was to give her hug. but your body wouldn't allow you to move, it was if you were frozen in your spot.
"we got in a fight." yunjin spoke as you stared at her, she looked as if she wanted to say more so you didn't dare open your mouth so she could continue. "he got mad that you and i are friends again, saying that you weren't to be trusted and i defended you, which made him even angrier. then he started saying how useless i was and that i was lucky enough that he even gave me a chance when he had so many girls lining up at his doorstep begging for a chance with him."
you clenched your fists that were resting on your lap, keeping yourself from making an impulsive decision that could cause you to be thrown in jail for aggravated assault on the man who was even lucky enough to call the girl you've been in love with since you first met her, her boyfriend. it angered you that she would even give him a chance, when you were right here.
"what happened after that? did you end things with him?" you asked, your voice finally finding itself.
"no i didn't, i still love him and i know he didn't mean all that stuff."
"jennifer you can't be serious, he was belittling you. also, the thought he would brag about having girls wanting a chance with him to his own girlfriend, should be enough for you to want to end things with him." you said, your voice was calm but with how long you've guys been friends, you were sure she could tell you were frustrated over the fact she's willing to stay with him.
who knew if this was even the worst thing he's ever said to her. from the past of what she told you about him, he was rather emotionally and verbally abusive to her (also doesn't add onto the fact that he was also a serial cheater, and you were positive he was also cheating on her but you knew she wouldn't believe you unless she caught onto it herself).
"i know, but i can't let him go. he's the best thing that's ever happened to me." yunjin mumbled as you felt your heartache, at the last sentence. you bit hard on your tongue to keep yourself from saying something that could cause a fight.
a fight that always occurred whenever you would belittle her boyfriend, you quickly changed the subject to get her mind off the excuse of a man, she was sadly dating and onto something else. it didn't take you long to get her smiling and laughing again, it was evening when you guys left the boba shop and she was smiling wider than you've had ever seen her smile in awhile, you haven't seen her smile big since before she had gotten with alex.
"well, i have to go. text me if you need anything or just want to hangout." you smiled, as she returned the smile as she nodded her head.
"thank you, y/n/n i really appreciate you listening to me. you are a great friend."
the loud sound of your heart breaking at the friend part, caused your eyes to slightly well up with tears. you cleared your throat before speaking, "of course, what are friendsfor." the words came out with a bitter taste in your mouth, as you waved her a goodbye and watched as her friends chaewon and sakura came from the cake shop next door.
friends, huh? i guess that's the only thing i'll ever be.
