Elvis had taken Claire out to a lunch date after they both had a stressful day in class with a quiz coming up though thanks to her advice and honesty, he made a lot of changes to the test where it wouldn't be insanely difficult

"Thank you again for taking me out, this is nice." Claire smiled after swallowing a bit of food

Elvis took a sip of crisp water from his glass to wash down the lumpy mashed potatoes. "I'm glad you think so." He winked

She took another bite of her grilled chicken avocado salad. "And if anyone sees us, we'll simply say we're catching up outside of class about the semester and what not."

He cleared his throat and tugged at the collar of his shirt. "Speaking of such, I forgot to tell you how your essay had beauty and the writing was jumping off the pages. I'm very impressed." He glanced at her for a moment, looking to their very flirtatious waitress when she dropped off the check at their table and her phone number for Elvis though he crumpled up the slip of paper and placed it in his water

Claire watched the whole thing and felt a twang of jealously. "Elvis, I don't mean to ask this right now or anything but there's no one else is there?"

"What do you mean?"

"No other women you're seeing behind my back?"

"Are you being serious?"

"Yes. You're avoiding my question."

Elvis sets down his fork and looked her right in the eyes. "No but there's something you should know if we're being honest. Years ago. I was engaged to be married to a girl I dated in high school. But just before I had left for college, she dumped me. So listen when I tell you this. I'm loyal to you and only you."

Claire still had her doubts that he wasn't being truthful but didn't press the matter any further, taking out some money from her purse to pay the bill since he was always picking up the tab if they ate out or even went shopping at the grocery store

Elvis walked with her out to her car and gave her a quick kiss. "Maybe on Friday I can stay the night at your place." He suggested. They had started to slowly become more serious in their relationship by having Elvis over at Claire's loft. She wanted to stop by Elvis' house sometime but informed her it wasn't much and they wouldn't have much privacy with his daddy being there

"Only if I get to see your house." Claire kissed him back before getting into her car, Elvis walking off to where he had parked his car and hummed a little tune to himself. She had just put her car in reverse when she heard her phone ding. Someone texted her. She took her phone out of her purse to see who it was and laughed softly. Elvis. He wanted her to follow him to his house so she could finally visit

Claire tailed him the whole way to his house which was only twenty minutes from the restaurant where they had their lunch date, pulling her car into the driveway behind him and parking before climbing out. Elvis closed the door of his vehicle and gestured to a luxurious mansion. "We're here."

"I didn't know your house was a mansion!" Her jaw dropped at the impressive structure

"I don't like to brag, you know? Let's go inside, I'll introduce you to my daddy." Elvis led her to the front door, Claire distracted by the entryway. He chuckled at how adorable she was and held her by the hand as they entered the home which was just as impressive on the inside. White carpet floors, a medium sized dining room to the left, a cozy living room to the right with a fireplace and widescreen tv, a piano sitting in a room just beyond the living room. Her eyes suddenly shifted focus to an older gentleman walking down the staircase in front of them. He had similar features of Elvis but looked to be in his forties or fifties, his hair a light whitish gray

"Hello, I'm Vernon." He greeted the young girl once he was at the bottom of the stairs and out stretched a hand, Claire gently shaking his rough yet delicate hand in hers. "I'm Claire."

His charming blue eyes lit up. Elvis undoubtedly got his eyes from Vernon. "So you're the one my boy has been talking about." He smiled and glanced at his son who stammered and tried to think of the right words to say

"You have a very lovely home, Mr. Presley." Claire changed the subject which Elvis was thankful for

"Thank you, dear. This isn't actually mine. Elvis owns the house." Vernon noticed how his only child was shifting uncomfortably. It was obvious that he didn't like to talk about the house or their luxury lifestyle

Claire cleared her throat to get Vernon's attention. "So Elvis speaks of me frequently I take it?"

He laughed. "Night and day. It's all he talks about, sweetie. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he has his future planned out with you."

Elvis finally spoke up after being a quiet nervous wreck for a bit. "Daddy, if you'll excuse us. We're going to be in my office."

Claire was surprised that he had his own private office and it looked much like what you'd see at any ordinary office for big named companies, minus the carpet. "I never would have guessed that you have a home office."

"I kinda have to if I need to take papers home with me to grade." He plopped down into a black leather chair at his desk

"How exactly did you come to own this place? It's amazing. Breathtaking."

Elvis was a little occupied as he wrote something on a sticky note, most likely a reminder to himself. "I don't like to talk about it, ok? Let's just drop it." He didn't look up

"I would love to live here."

"Oh yeah? When I bought this house I intended to have friends stay here if they wanted to or if I met the right girl and we had kids..." He trailed off and shook his head. "But it's just me and daddy who live here." He tore off the flimsy piece of vanilla paper and set it on a pile of papers to his left before writing again on another sticky note

"Did your mom live here too?" Claire asked

The tip of the pencil snapped, Elvis taking a deep breath at tears forming behind his eyes. "I think you should leave, Claire." His voice quiet and full of hurt

She didn't quite understand why he was pushing her away though the more she thought about it for the rest of the day, she must have struck a tender cord when she mentioned his mother. It only made her wonder what happened and where things would go for her and Elvis since she felt as though she overstepped her boundaries too many times at his house

I will most likely be taking a break from writing, not just with this book but my other Elvis books too
