Chapter 1: The Reaping

It is cold when I wake up, I look around for my sister Malaya.

"Catie?" I hear a voice call. I get out of bed and hurry to the kitchen,

" Malaya why are you up so early?" I rub my eyes and yawn.

"Today is reaping day, " she frowns. " Didn't you remember?" I shake my head

" I mean I guess I knew it was soon, but I didn't know it was here already." she nods and continues to make toast. Malaya is my older sister, she was only born a year earlier than me though. I am 14 and I have straight blonde hair a bright blue eyes, my sister,15, is blonde too but her hair is darker, and her eyes are a softer shade of blue almost a gray. We are very close because we are the only siblings we have, my mother is still alive but she doesn't seem to care much for us. My father died when I was 10 in a coal mining accident, we live in district 12 so almost all the men become coal miners.

We eat our breakfast and begin to get ready, I pick out a dazzling aqua dress that compliments my eyes, it is knee high and the sleeves reach my elbows, I button up the new dress that I am so fortunate to have, considering we are so poor. I was amazed when I saw the color, most clothes here in district 12 are dull, but the vendor wouldn't tell me their secret. I put on black flats and crimp my hair the easy way.... By braiding it. When I remove the braids after hours of waiting they look esquisite!

At 1:00 p.m we head out to the square where the reaping is held every year. We check in and I go to the 14 year old section, I stand next to my friend Macy and we hold hands for luck, we aren't as scared as we were our first reaping but you don't wanna be chosen in our district because there are no careerers to volunteer to take your place. After a few moments of waiting I see Effie waddle on stage,

"Welcome, Welcome!, Happy Hunger Games and May the Odds be Ever in Your Favor!" she smiles. "anyways ladies first as always" she moves her hand around in the bowl, we all wait tense, scared, then finally she moves to the mic. "Catie Moraine" she shouts excitedly
