i've got a war on my mind.
the man yells words that churn into a blur
shouting and screaming
his voice curdled.
my mother shrinks away from every biting word
ducking away, tears rolling down her face.
and then i see his hand
fly out
snap across her cheek with the sound of a cracking whip
sending her toppling to the ground.
my mother cries into the carpet
and i scream
in a voice so small
nobody hears it.
