A telepathic link

There are so many ways I could start this tale.  I'm not quite sure where to begin this story as it happened a rather long time ago. Fourteen years ago to be exact when I was nine years old. When  I moved to spring Falls, Idaho with a new half of the family. Our first trip was inside a camper. You could say that I was not pleased. That was until we reached our destination: An actual hot spring. The campsite was right on the edge. Excited to finally be out of the camper I ran around like a crazy person. As any respectable 9 year old would. I grabbed a stick and began hashing out a make-believe story with myself as the heroine. I was rolling down a hill when I nearly crashed into a family setting up camp.
This was how I encountered my telepathic link with a young sweat blonde blue-eyed girl. We didn't say a word, just stared at each other. It clicked we were friends. We spent the rest of the afternoon playing it wasn't until we were called to do it that we both realized we spoke a different language. I spoke English and her German. This didn't matter we somehow just knew what the other wanted. Over the course of my week-long vacation, we played in the river spring. Tried to climb the giant boulders, harassed my temporary siblings, and played with the pets inside our campers. We stayed up into the wee hours only getting a few hours rest. I'm sure we drove our families up the wall.
Our telepathic link was ever acknowledge by our parents my mother even commented how our mannerisms and thought process were the same. I would get food she would get drinks. We were a team. The thought of being separated broke my heart. It came faster then you would have believed. How I begged the universe for just one more day. Careful what you wish for because it can come back to bite you in the arse.
On my last day at the campsite I wanted one last adventure and began wandering a little too far. Needless to say, we were lost. All the trees looked the same. It was her idea to put stones and sticks together so we know the way we had been. Then we began to call for help. Now if you're wondering why we didn't have phones most kids my age were lucky to use their parent's razor flip phones. I may self get one but that's a story for another time. Our nerves got the better of us and we flopped down under one of the many endless trees. She laid her head on me as I apologized. She just patted my head to say something that I took as reassurance that we'd be okay. A gust of wind blee over us making the branches creak ominously. My friend then stood up as if she knew something I didn't. She grabbed my hand and ran. Her skinny legs hitting the ground work great speed. My own stubby eggs struggling to keep up.
Our feet hit the ground crunching the leaves below us. The woods extended deep into the cozy darkness. A calming song erupts from a nearby tree where a bird had found it's home. It's then that I abruptly stop pointing at a stack of rocks and sticks. Grunting she takes off eastward. Running after her I realize how dark its getting, the sun is beginning to set. She had almost disappeared out of sight when I slammed into her sending us both pumeting into the water below. Warmth filled my body. Sending terror through my mind. Startled I began thrashing about as frantic hands grabbed for help. I don't know how we made it to the edge but we did. Our young minds didn't quite comprehend what had happened. As the warmth from the water began to ware off we walked along the rivers edge. It was cold that I began to splash us with the water. Cautiously, we walked along the edge staying in the water. It was hopeless.
We set down and soaked in the water. Even at nine years old I knew we were screwed. She must have known to because she squeezed my hand. Wiping away a tear from her eye she began walking along the muddy embackment keeping her get warm. I did the same. We had no idea just how important it was that we stayed warm. Growing restless we got to our feet heading straight ahead we fumbled around in the dark. Cold gusts of wind pricing our faces.

The night grew colder yet we pushed on a string sharp swish filled the night over and over again. Listening intently we followed the sound. Coming upon a group of night fishermen. They were sound, exchanging looks of confusion. we called the odd sound that had no place in mature. Then through the moonlight we saw it. The casting of a fishing line. "Excuse me!" I called put into the night as we ran straight ahead coming upon  a group of night fishermen. They were sound to see us.
Frantically I told them what happened. Thankfully, I remembered the name of the campsite. Like speed it self they gave us a ride, gave us snacks and delivered us safely to out parents. There were tears and words of joy. Emotions That were clear in any language. Tears, and tight hugs filled the night.
Back within the safety of our parents we set infront of the camp fire. A sharing marshmallows and hot chocolate. In the morning our parents packed up camp and we parted ways. It would be 14 years until we connected by chance through Facebook. Language translates come in hand. We even hike of our next great adventure. Hopefully this time we won't get lost. An remember somewhere out there someone gets you without talking. All it takes is a kind look.
