CHAPTER 7

I don’t know how long it was but it seemed like a lifetime before the three of them eventually returned. Jeremy held a glass of water and Blake had a bag of chips. They both placed their items on the table in front of me. Jason had his hand behind his back.

“Thought you might be hungry,” Jeremy said gently.

“We also noticed you kept rubbing your head. We have the pain medication the doctor prescribed. We’ll give it to you if you unlock the laptop for us,” Jason said cautiously.

I seriously almost burst out laughing. I couldn’t believe they were attaching strings to something that they knew I needed. It was so ridiculous and I can’t believe I didn’t see it coming. Unless I wanted to continue on with a big ass headache I had no other choice.

“I’ll do it on two conditions. Firstly, I get the pain meds first and secondly, no hovering. All right? While I unlock the computer you guys have to sit down, it’s really distracting having someone looking over your shoulder,” I replied determinedly.

“Deal,” Jason answered quickly as he took off the lid of the medication bottle.

“It says on the back of the bottle that you’re supposed to take two tablets with a glass of water and then you have to eat something after it. So we got you a bag of chips. I hope you like Doritos,” Jason continued.

“Who doesn’t like Doritos?” Jeremy asked with incredulity.

“Doritos are fine,” I said taking the two tablets that Jason handed me and swallowed them with my glass of water. Then I opened the bag of chips and started eating. They made me eat the whole bag before I could start on the computer.

I finished and contemplated licking my fingers, but decided on just wiping my hands on the side of my jeans. I mean licking your fingers is kinda gross especially if you haven’t washed your hands all day.

As a computer genius, if I do say so myself, I had designed basically all of the software on my computer as well as the encrypted login. So I was never really intending to log in and give them all my work. So I’m madly tapping away at the keyboard putting in commands, but I wasn’t logging in like the boys thought. I was putting everything on the laptop onto the SD card that was still in the side of the computer. After the I completed the transfer I then wiped the laptop so it had nothing on at all.

I pressed the enter button with a flourish just so it looked like I was done. While the three of them got up and walked around the table I stealthily took out the SD card and slid it into my pocket. I stood up so they could see better and leaned against the wall opposite the door, head bowed so they couldn't see my triumphant smile. I was feeling pretty happy with myself that I’d fooled them, but then there is always something, some little detail that you forget.

You know how on your computer it comes up with a little bubble like thing in the corner of your screen for notifications and whatnot? Well mine does that for almost everything. Let’s say, for example, when you have deleted EVERYTHING off your computer. At that same moment Jason spun around and walked right up to me I realised what had happened.

“It’s all gone! You deleted everything off the laptop. Everything!” Jason shouted at me.

I couldn’t believe I was so stupid and forgot to permanently disable that function. I was internally kicking myself. Blake was sitting at the table searching to see if he could recover anything, but I knew he wouldn’t find anything.

“Damn it Lily, I thought we were getting somewhere! And then you go and stab us in the back! The longer you avoid these questions the longer you’re going to be here, but once we’re done with you we’re handing you over to child protection services,” Jason continued still yelling.
