Chapter 1

The sun was about to rise. The small village deserted, not one sound disturbing its sleepiness. The only thing awake was the council. This is the only time they are free, my chance is now. I walked towards the old, crooked, abandoned building. Touching the brick wall, I found the secret door. I was hesitant whether or not I should really do this. It’s now or never, I told myself. I closed the door behind; making sure no one saw me.

The hallway was cold and dark, only a candle light illuminating the entire place. Two mahogany doors stood in front of me. They were just behind the door, the ones who controlled our whole society. The one’s who can help me in this crisis. I opened the door, interrupting the meeting.

“Ahem. I am sorry to bother you council, but I was wondering if I may have a word with all of you,” I spoke to the head chair, Lysander.

“Come in, come in, Annabel. Take a seat, please.”

            “Thank you.”

I took a deep breath; may luck be with me.

“What would you like to speak to us about?” Lysander inquired.

It took me a second to answer.

“Lysander, the council, I would like to ask permission to help in the war that is going on. It’s to my concern that innocent people being imprisoned are being killed. It should be stopped and I say we be the ones to stop this massacre.”

Silence filled the room. No one answered. They all looked at me with blank expressions. Only Lysander was looking at me peculiarly.

“And why would you want us to help, if you don’t mind my asking?” Lysander finally spoke.

“My sire, it’s a terrible tragedy what the Jewish and all the other people are going through. I find it my duty to help. Even though we may not be human, we used to be. The countries in this generation are not doing anything to stop the German Nazis. It’s sad to see no one having the courage enough to try and stop them.”

“And you think it’s our duty to stop them? Lysander questioned.

“Well, yes I do. We may not be human, but we live with them. They provide the things we need, we owe it to them.”

Someone from the table stood up. His features were hidden, since there was barely any light in here.

“We owe nothing to those humans!” he said, “They have done nothing but make our lives a disaster.”

“We can’t just sit here and do nothing. Lives are at stake. People are being taken from their homes. Children have no families. They are dying in filthy ghettos. Diseases spread quickly. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. How helpless and useless I felt. We need to cease this war!” I said, exasperated.

Their expressions hadn’t changed. It’s like talking to brick walls.

“If you will not help me then I will do it myself. It’s unbelievable how selfish you people have become. To think from all the years you’ve spent on this earth you would have more compassion.”

I threw my arms in the air. I couldn’t get through to them. No one moved, no one even blinked. For such old vampires, they weren’t very expressive.

“Annabel, calm yourself, you cant possible do it alone. This isn’t ancientEgypt, where you can rush into battle and expect everyone to follow you. Ana, you have to be more practical. If we rush into battle the Germans and even the Jews will know there’s something inhuman about us they will know our true identity. That’s a risk I'm not willing to take.”

“I am. If it means doing some good in this world, then I’m up for it. I’m even wiling to risk my own life.”

Lysander just stared at me. A knowing look came across his face.

“And that’s how you got yourself here. This is a suicide mission, Annabel. Not only would you get yourself killed but also other people.”

“What is your final answer, Lysander?”

“My answer is no.”

I couldn’t believe this. My face turned cold and hard. Of all people I thought he would help me, I guess I was wrong.

“I was completely wrong about you, all of you,” with that I stormed out of the room.

What they didn’t know was I had a plan of my own. Whether they liked it or not I will help those humans.
