Kim was in the school. She had to be, it was the same scream I heard before the lights in my house went out. April must have dragged her here to get me to come and trade her to me for the information on the safe.  I knew nothing of where the safe was, but April didn't know that.

I let my fingers slide off of the cold metal of the door handle. I had to get Kim back, who knows what will happen if I don't. I slowly retrace my steps past the science room. Only momentarily pausing to see if the lion had somehow come back. After reassuring myself I continued sneaking silently down the hallway.

I am just about to cross by my locker hiding space and the tray when a scream echoes through the halls. This time closer. But it wasn’t just a scream, she screamed one word, help. I know it is my fault Kim is in this position, but I am doing all I can to get her out.

I reach the end of the hall. Long shadows are finding their way down the hall closer to me. Two shadows to be exact. I press my back to the wall as the shadows come closer to the corner of the hall. Even though the shadows are distorted, i can tell that the larger one has an arm around the shorter shadow. The short shadow, which I assume to be Kim, seemed  to be stumbling along.

I wait no longer in my hiding spot and step out. Kim’s head jerks up sending her blond hair cascading down her back. A slight smile spreads across her face but soon disappears when she looks up at April.

“ Well, well, well, if it isn’t little miss redhead,” April shouts,” I knew you would come for your little friend, she is quite the feisty one.”

April shoves Kim forward. Kim runs over to where I am standing and cowers behind me. I look at the small dot of light coming from the exit to the left, behind April. She catches me staring at the exit and she sneers” I won’t let you get away that easily.”

With saying that black mist seeps across the floor surrounding Kim and I. Kim steps closer to my side.

“ Now, I gave you your little ‘friend’ back, it’s time to give me something in return. I would like to know where the safe is, I could use some new expensive items, and I’m sure master does too.” April says while reaching into her pocket.

“ I know where the safe is,” I lie right through my teeth,” just give me a while and i will show you where it is!”

“ Liar!” screeches April. I want to run forward towards April and sock her in the face when she pulls out he locket and lets it dangle from her finger.

“ Oh, you want this?” She asks pointing to the locket in mock shock.

I glare at her as she swings the locket back and forth, taunting me. I hear Kim gasp and look over to her. She is staring at the ground. I slowly look down and see that the black mist has taken the shape of several different animals, including a vulture.

As the animals close in, the locket on April’s hand begins to glow green. she drops the locket when her hand begins to dissolve into dust, just like the vulture did. The locket hits the ground and pops open, making it glow even brighter.

April stares at her hand as it continues to dissolve. I take a chance and leap through the mist animals and snatch the locket. April is still too preoccupied with her now dissolving arm to notice the locket was gone. I race back through the animals and grab Kim by the wrist.

We race down the hallway with the animals in pursuit.  I hold the locket by the chain and let it fly out behind me. The mist animals shrink back in fear, crawling backwards towards April. When the animals are at a safe enough distance, I shove the now dull locket back into my pocket.

Just as I reach the exit, I look back and see half of April’s body has dissolved to dust. As Kim and I shove open the double doors of the school, I hear April scream “ noooo,” as the rest of her body disappears.

A slight smile finds its way to my lips as I realize that I managed to rescue Kim, and I know that April won’t be bothering me anytime soon.
