venus' pov
we've gathered in the lab, discussing what happened with ultron. i'm still wondering what he meant by him killing someone.
"all our work is gone. ultron cleared out, used the internet as an escape hatch." bruce said.
"ultron." steve said in disbelief.
"he's been in everything. files, surveillance. probably knows more about us than we know each other." natasha said.
.. oh.
well.
"..well.." i trailed off. cho and i gave each other a knowing look.
"he's in your files, he's in your internet. what if he decides to access something a little more exciting?" rhodey asked.
"exciting?" i asked.
"nuclear codes." maria said.
"nuclear codes," rhodey repeated, "look, we need to make some calls, assuming we still can."
"nukes? he said he wanted us dead." natasha said.
"he didn't say dead. he said extinct." steve said.
"he said he killed somebody." clint said.
"JARVIS?" i asked. it was the only logical answer since no one else was around at the time.
i think.
"but there wasn't anyone in the building."
"yes there was. venus, you were right." tony said, bringing up the 3D image of JARVIS' consciousness.
"this is insane." bruce said, shocked.
"JARVIS was the first line of defense. he would've shut ultron down, it makes sense." steve reasoned.
"no, ultron could've assimilated JARVIS. this isn't strategy, this is.. rage." bruce finishes. thor came storming in, immediately holding tony up by his neck.
"woah, hold on!" i say, immediately stepping in.
"it's going around." clint said.
"come on. use your words, buddy." tony said to thor.
"i have more than enough words to describe you, stark." thor said angrily.
"thor, we all do, but that doesn't mean you have to throw him around like a ragdoll for it." i said.
"thor! the legionnaire." steve said. thor let go of tony.
"trail went cold about a hundred miles out but it's headed north, and it has the scepter. now we have to retrieve it, again." thor spoke.
"the genie's out of the bottle. clear and present is ultron."
"i don't understand," cho started, "you built this program. why is it trying to kill us?"
"yeah, because i would personally like to know if you purposely programmed this to take us out since you have the ability to do that." i spoke, annoyed about this whole situation already.
tony started laughing, bruce shaking his head to get him to stop.
"you think this is funny?" thor said, finding no humor in this.
"no. it's probably not, right? is this very terrible? is it so... is it so... it is. it's so terrible." tony replied.
"how the hell do you find humor in this? the thing YOU created is trying to kill US." i said, starting to get pissed off.
"this could've been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand!" thor yelled.
"no, i'm sorry. i'm sorry. it is funny. it's a hoot that you don't get why we need this." tony said, still laughing a bit.
"we 'need' the thing that's trying to make us extinct?" i questioned.
"tony, maybe this isn't the best time to—" bruce started.
"really?! that's it? you just roll over, show your belly, every time someone snarls." tony said.
"only when i've created a murder bot."
"we didn't. we weren't even close. were we close to an interface?" tony said.
"well, you did something right. and you did it right here. the avengers were supposed to be different than SHIELD." steve said.
"anybody remember when I carried a nuke through a wormhole?"
"now what the hell does that have to do with any of this?" i asked, getting angrier by the second.
"no, it's never come up." rhodey said.
"recall that? a hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. we're standing three hundred feet below it. we're the avengers. we can bust arms dealers all the live long day, but, that up there? that's... that's the end game. how were you guys planning on beating that?"
"together."
"we'll lose."
"then we'll do that together, too." tony looked at steve while he spoke. "thor's right. ultron's calling us out. and i'd like to find him before he's ready for us. the world's a big place. let's make it smaller."
