"Where’s Isabela?” Erik asked Mario, as he looked around and realized she wasn’t anywhere to be seen on the backyard.
“I don’t know, she was right here… You think she left?” Mario asked back, he too had realized that Isabela wasn’t around.
“I don’t know, or maybe she went inside? She still hasn’t fully recovered, you wanna go check?” Erik was worried, Isabela was still suffering from weakness and the fever was still coming and going.
“Yeah, let’s go,” Mario replied, and they both walked inside. Just as they stepped through the door, they saw Isabela standing on the other end of the passage. Their walking accelerated, and just when they were a few feet behind her, their eyes went on the door – Marco was standing there, with Carolin in front of him – Carolin was hugging Cathy, who was welcoming her. Erik and Mario looked at each other at the same time, and both took a few steps back so Marco wouldn’t see them. “What the fuck?” Erik asked Mario, with furrowed eyebrows. “I have no fucking idea, Carolin was not supposed to be here! Poor Isabela, you go speak to her, and be sure to call out to her pretty loud, yeah? I’ll go take care of Marco,” Mario answered. Erik responded with a yes, and called out to Isabela pretty loudly, as he walked up to her. Isabela turned back, and Erik noticed that Marco, had shot him a glare, but he pretended as if he didn’t see him at all. “Hey, Bela! I was looking for you! You feeling okay?” Erik said, as he stood in front of her and cupped her face with his hands.
“Yeah, I’m good,” Isabela smiled, as she forced a smile on her face. Marco clenched his fists; he couldn’t take his eyes off of Isabela and Erik. “C’mon, let’s go inside,” Erik held Isabela’s hand, and was about to pull her back to the backyard when Isabela spoke up saying, “Actually, I was gonna go freshen up a bit, I’ll join you in a while?”
Mario went and hugged Marco during Isabela and Erik’s conversation, and he could clearly feel Marco getting pissed. He suddenly noticed Marco lips breaking into a little smile when Isabela was walking away from Erik, and Marco’s eyes were following Isabela. Mario shot Erik a look, Erik furrowed his eyebrows and cocked his head up a slight bit in response, and Mario cocked his head to right and indicated at Isabela with his eyes, as if asking Erik to follow her. Erik shouted out, “Bela, wait, your phone’s with me!” and scurried behind her into the guestroom of the house. Mario kept looking at Marco and he noticed how Marco’s smile had disappeared the moment Isabela’s name came out of Erik’s mouth, and his jaws clenched at the sight of Erik following Isabela. Mario let out a sly smile; things were going exactly how he wanted them to.
Erik walked into the guestroom, and Mario soon followed. Isabela was sitting on the bed doing what seemed like a daily thing for her now – crying. Erik closed the door as Mario sat next to Isabela, Erik had tried speaking to her but she seemed too devastated to speak. Mario put his index finger under Isabela’s cheek, and lifted her head up to face him. “Look at me, look at me. Why are you crying, Bela? For Woody? Listen to me, that guy’s my best friend, but what he’s doing is absolutely unexplainable. And I need you to forget that. It’s not easy, but why should you let him affect your mood when you’re clearly not affecting his? He’s an idiot, Bela. Go out there, and enjoy the party – for yourself, for your mood, for your friends. Don’t let him ruin your day, sweetie! He’s not worth being upset over, especially not after what he just did. Please, come with us, and just enjoy yourself. Do not care about anything else. I know you’re sensible enough to see this logically, so please,” Mario explained, Isabela nodded along and wiped off her tears – she knew he was right, she deserved to enjoy herself, regardless of what Marco thought, or did. She got up and re-did her makeup, and walked out of the room smiling. It was time to show Marco she could be just fine without him.
All three of them walked back into the backyard, it was around 7:30 PM and the dancing was already going on like crazy. Isabela looked around and found Marco sitting in a corner with Caro next to him, and looked away instantly when Marco looked at her. Mario pulled her into the dancing crowd, and she joined in without any hesitation. Marco couldn’t help but stare at Isabela the whole time she was dancing, she hadn’t looked this lively in quite a while – Probably because he didn’t give her a chance to enjoy herself while he was drowning in the frustration of injuries. Caro finally took her eyes off the phone and turned to Marco and asked, “Wanna dance?”
Marco almost declined, but his eyes fell back on Isabela, who was still dancing like there was no tomorrow. He changed his mind and accepted, as they both went up and started dancing. Marco was still staring at Isabela, and she didn’t even bother looking his way even once. Cathy took the microphone and announced that the music’s genre would be changed from partying to some slow dancing music, so everyone can calm down a bit – Isabela was planning to go sit down, but Erik pulled her back by her hand, and they both began slow dancing. “Love is a laserquest” by Arctic Monkeys played pretty loud; it was the perfect sort of music for the nice and cool night. “Thank you, Erik,” Isabela said, as they swayed from one side to another.
“Thank you? For what?” Erik asked, with a bright smile.
“For helping me out, or else I’d be a huge mess right now.”
“You don’t have to thank me, Bela! That’s what friends are for! And is it really possible to be more messy than you were?!”
Isabela couldn’t help but laugh a little; she really was a terrible mess! Erik spun her twice and just when he was about to pull her back in, Isabela felt someone grab her other hand and pull her in the opposite direction. When she finally stood still, she found her body as close as it was possible to someone else’s –She looked up, and her eyes instantly recognized the face she had studied every inch of in the past two years; Marco’s. “What the hell?” Isabela asked, with furrowed eyebrows. Marco, instead of saying anything, simply smirked. “It hurt, didn’t it?” he asked. His grip on Isabela’s waist was tight, and he was holding her hand even strongly.
“Well, you are hurting me right now, so let go,” Isabela said. Marco loosened his grip a bit, but not enough for her to escape. His face still had a smirk on.
“Seeing me with Caro, it hurt, didn’t it?” he asked, again.
“No,” Isabela answered with a lot of courage, even though she felt like she’d break any moment. “It doesn’t matter to me.”
“Then look into my eyes, and repeat that,” Marco replied. Isabela just couldn’t look into his eyes, she knew she wouldn’t be able to hold herself from crying. But still, she somehow looked up at him and went “It doesn’t matter to me,” and instantly looked away.
Marco let out a laugh, “You can’t look into my eyes for 5 seconds and you say it doesn’t matter to you? Right. Keep telling yourself that, we both know you can’t lie to my face.”
Isabela furrowed her eyebrows and looked straight into his eyes – she now had a point to prove. She counted ‘til 5 and looked away, and just when she did, tears rolled straight down her eyes. Marco noticed the tears and flashed a winning smile. “Told you,” he declared, and released Isabela from his grip, she ran straight into the house.
After a few minutes, Marco saw Isabela walking back into the backyard with a pretty big smile on her face, and he kept smiling, too. He stood near the door, expecting Isabela, who was walking his way, to just run into his arms and tell him she loves him; but instead, she walked straight past him. Marco turned back and with narrowed eyes, watched Isabela putting her hand on Erik’s arm and calmly telling him something – It was as if absolutely nothing had happened a few minutes ago! He walked closer to them and heard Isabela saying, “Could you drop me back home, Erik? My head kinda hurts… It’s fine if you don’t wanna leave though, I’ll take a taxi! No pressure at all!” And of course, Erik wasn’t going to leave Isabela alone like that, so he opted for giving her a ride.
Marco stood with folded arms, gritted his teeth and watched as Isabela left the party with Erik. About fifteen minutes later, Caro walked up to Marco and asked him to dance, and he straight declined. She whined for a while, and Marco ended up shouting on her to shut her up. Mario stood with Mats and Cathy and watched the whole scene, and Mario let out a deep breath when he saw Marco storming out of the party. “I’ll leave now too, guys,” Mario said to the hosts. “I have some work to finish off.”
