"Chief, I really need a month off," I desperately said to our Chief of Surgery here in Hernandez Memorial Hospital. He is looking at me intently, not giving me any guesses whether he's going to give what I've been asking him for months now or not.

"I know that you've been asking me to give you a month off these past few months now, Nova," Anito.

"And since you're one of my best surgeons, I'm giving you your month off now," tuloy niya na ikinagulat ko.

I've been working at Chief's family hospital every since I passed medical school. I never thought of transferring to any other hospitals kahit na ang daming offers nang maipasa ko ang fellowship exam ko. My other friends even begged me to stay.

Hernandez Memorial Hospital is only the fourth highest hospital here in the Philippines.

"Work where you feel like you won't be getting as much pressure as you receive now, Nova."

"Don't work for them, work for yourself."

I can still hear the voice of the person who said that to me.

I sighed at the thought.

"Thank you so much, Tito Ric!" sabi ko at tumayo upang bigyan siya ng mahigpit na yakap.

"May I ask why did you and Ara suddenly asked for a month off?" taas kilay na tanong niya.

Chief Ricardo Hernandez is like a father to me already. He is my Dad's bestfriend that's why I know he treats me like a daughter here at their hospital.

"I'll see you after a month, then," ngiting sabi nito at kumalas sa yakap.

"And I'll take care of your one remaining patient," tuloy ulit niya.
