16. When I Return

I kept changing my mind. First, I wanted to come back as last year’s beauty pageant winner. Next, a gorgeous Angelfish like the one in our fish tank.

The no-nonsense nurse put me right. “When you’re dead, that’s it. No return.”

I hated her.

She lived by the sea. I saw her paddling one day, on her own. Her thighs wobbled. Something attracted her attention. She waded into the sea, waist deep. A sudden rip tide caught her unawares. She drowned.

I found her body on the seabed.

My other mermaid friends felt sorry for her. Not me, though.
