NINE

“Hi Marivi, I thought you would never show up. And happy birthday.” Amanda greets me grimly.

What’s just up with this girl? She’s so moody sometimes.

“Happy birthday Marivi” Colin runs to me. For his age he is quite fit.

“Thank you two. And sorry I’m so late, we had an unexpected guest.” I grin, mostly at Colin.

Amanda groans and goes back to wirk while m Boss presses a little box into my hands.

“What’s this?” I ask stupidly.

“Obviously, it’s a gift, silly.” I saw that myself.

“Oh Colin, you know, you don't have to give me anything.” I protest.

“Sure I do. And I did not really spend money on it anyways. My wife came up with the idea.” He

assures me.

“Well, tell Elisabeth thank you from me.”

“Are you not going to open it?” he demands and I hear a bit of frustration in his voice. Only then I

realise that I still hold the little red box in my hands.

“uhmm.. Sure” I mutter, while carefully opening it. My breath catches in my throat, when I see what’s

inside.

“Oh my god, Colin! You fixed my chain.” I scream excited. There lays my chain, the one I got from my

grandma and that broke on one of my first days here. I had put it to the broken jewellery and never

again spent so much as a thought after it. And now it is repaired, beautifully glistering in the cute

box. I throw my arms around Colin and then demand

“Put it on my neck, please.” When he’s done, I run to the mirror, wanting to see it once again

hanging around my neck. It feels exactly the same as I remembered it.

“My cousin really has an excellent taste when it comes to jewellery.” Colin states proud. Yeah right,

my grandma is my Boss’ cousin.

“Yes she does.” I agree “And now we should go to work, I’ll tell you why I came late at the break.”

When I finally is time for break, Amanda heads out and Colin and me go for a coffee.

“What’s it with Amanda, she’s acting weirdly.” I ask him curious.

“I don’t know, I hoped you could tell me, you’re a girl yourself after all. You know I did not understand

what was in this mind of yours at her age too.” He growls.

“Hmm.. I might ask her later.” And then I tell him of the events in the morning.

“That’s why I came late.” I finish. Just then my phone rings. Jim.

“Hey, what’s up?” I answer his call.

“I can present my business plan tomorrow evening. Will you accompany me? Please?” he begs.

“Wow, that’s great. Sure I will support you.” I cry excited. “When and where?”

“They gave me an address, somewhere in the nowhere. I’ll pick you up at 6.30pm.” he describes.

Oh well, that’s gonna be a long drive when he says in the nowhere.

“Okay, I’ll be ready. Dude, I should really go back to work now, I’ll call you tonight.”, I sigh.
