Tessa

I play the last few bars of Wherever You Will Go and then stop. My fingers rest on the keys. I don’t understand why Josh just ignored me like that. Was it something I did? All I did was hug George. And why would Josh care if I hugged George? He’s got this girl he likes. Why can’t George and I be like that? This is so confusing. I wish I didn’t think as much as I did. I stand up and walk away from the piano, into the living room. Only a few people are in here. James, at his guitar, Josh sat on the sofa, and Christopher. I ignore Chris and sit down next to Josh.

“You okay?” I ask him. He looks down at his phone like he never heard me. I repeat myself and he just walks off. What’s up with him? I look down at my hands, trying to hold in any tears that will maybe fall.

“Don’t cry Tessa,” I feel James sit down beside me, “It’s not worth it.”

“What am I doing wrong James?” I ask him.

“You’re not doing anything wrong Tessa,” James sighs, “Josh is just being Josh.”

“He wasn’t like this before,” I say quietly, “Why does he hate me now?”

“He doesn’t hate you Tessa,” James says finally, “He just…”

“He just hates me.” I say finally. James looks me in the eye.

“I don’t know why anyone could hate you Tessa,” He tells me, “You’re just too…crazy for that.”

“I know!” I announce, “I’m amaZAYN!” James laughs. I smile back at him whilst I get some more jelly babies from the cupboard. “Want some?” I offer James the packet. He shakes his head. What is it with people here not eating jelly babies? If Liv and Brandon were here, we would have eaten the whole lot. Yeah, Liv and Brandon left yesterday. That was sad. But I don’t care! They’re coming back on Saturday morning!

George

I walk into the lounge with my guitar and see Tessa running around like mad, and James watching her, laughing to himself.

“MONKEY!” Tessa yells, “I MISSED YOU MONKEY!” James laughs again.

“I missed you too Tessa.” I tell her, sitting down beside James.

“PLAY GUITAR FOR ME!” Tessa smiles sweetly, “PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!”

“What have you given her?” I ask James as we watch Tessa run around the kitchen, throwing jelly babies up in the air.

“Well…she had three packs of jelly babies, last time I checked.” James says sheepishly. I giggle. Tessa dances around. I play my audition song for her, and she smiles, her eyes wide.

“That was amaZAYN!” She squeals. James rolls his eyes. “LET ME GO GET UNICORN!” Tessa runs out and comes back with her guitar.

“Unicorn?” James raises his eyebrows.

“Unicorn is lovely,” Tessa strokes her guitar, “Don’t listen to what those silly things are telling you Unicorn.”

“So are you going to play for us?” I ask. Tessa nods.

“This is a special song to that special someone I love with all of my heart.” Tessa announces. It’s going to be about Josh. She fancies him.

“Baby, baby,

Why do I love you so?

My friends tell me I’m crazy

Because I love you so,

I wish I knew how,

To not eat you in one go

Because even though you’re a jelly baby

I love you so.”

“Nice song Tessa.” Ella and Dan say, walking in, hands joined. Tessa smiles at them and then grins.

“My baby is growing up!” Tessa wipes a fake tear away from her eye. Dan and Ella hop away from each other quickly.

“Children these days.” She rolls her eyes.

“Tessa…” James, Ella, Dan and I say together, “You’re a child as well.”

“Actually I become an adult next week.” Tessa tells us, rolling her eyes again. “Now Unicorn,” She continues, oblivious to us all planning with our eyes, “Let’s get you back to bed!”

She disappears.

“When’s her birthday?” We all hiss to each other, but when she prances back in we look away from each other.

“JELLY BABIES!” Tessa sings at the top of her voice, “JELLY BABIES!” She turns on the radio and dances round. Then she stops. “It’s One Direction.” She breathes.

“HEY GIRL I’M WAITING ON YA, I’M WAITING ON YA, SO COME ON LET ME SNEAK YOU OUT!” She sings along, “AND HAVE A CELEBRATION, A CELEBRATION, THE MUSIC UP THE WINDOWS DOWN! JAYMI DANCE WITH ME!” Jaymi walks towards her and they dance madly together, “YEAH, WE’LL BE DOING WHAT WE DO, JUST PRETENDING THAT WE’RE COOL AND WE KNOW IT TO…YEAH; WE’LL BE DOING WHAT WE DO, JUST PRETENDING THAT WE’RE COOL SO TONIGHT. LET’S GOT CRAZY, CRAZY, CRAZY TILL WE SEE THE SUN, I KNOW WE ONLY MET BUT LET’S PRETEND IT’S LOVE, AND NEVER, NEVER, NEVER STOP FOR ANYONE. TONIGHT LET’S GET SOME, AND LIVE WHILE WE’RE YOUNG!”  She twirls around and underneath the kitchen cabinets.

“WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP?!?” Christopher yells at her. Tessa looks at him.

“No,” She replies calmly, “I like this music, this is how I am, this is how I always will be, and if you don’t like it, that’s your problem.” Christopher glares at her and then storms out. Tessa shrugs and goes back to singing and dancing with us all.

“AND GIRL…YOU AND I, WE’RE BOUT TO MAKE SOME MEMORIES TONIIIGHT, I WANNA LIVE WHILE WE’RE YOUNG, WE’RE GONNA LIVE WHILE WE’RE YOUNG!” They climb on top of the table and dance around whilst singing at the tops of their voices. We all laugh watching them.

Josh walks in and sits down next to Ella. Tessa looks at James, worry in her eyes. James smiles reassuringly.

“Come and sing with us Josh!” Tessa says, looking to Josh. Josh opens his mouth but then looks away. Tessa looks back at James.

“Please?” Tessa tries again. Josh doesn’t answer. Tessa looks at James again and then disappears into her room.

Josh

Everyone in the room stares at me. I look away. George disappears after Tessa. Tessa. She told me I had to talk to…her, but I can’t. Every time I try, she’s with him or is just…being her. So what am I supposed to do? Every time when it’s the right time I just make a fool of myself. I’m rubbish. This isn’t working to plan.

Tessa

“Tessa?” George calls my name from the other side of the door. I don’t want to talk to anyone, but George is my best friend. I want to talk to him.

“It’s open.” I say. George walks in and sits down beside me. He wraps his arm around me and I lay my head on his chest.

“I’m sorry about Josh…” George says finally.

“I don’t understand George,” I tell him quietly, “The other day he was asking me for advice, and now he’s ignoring me. What am I doing wrong?”

“You’re not doing anything wrong Tessa.” George says, repeating what James told me earlier.

“Is it because I’m not her?” I ask.

“Tessa,” George sighs, “You may not be his ‘her’, but there’s someone for everyone.”

“I know,” I say sadly, “Just the person meant for me has got lost on the way.” George smiles.

“You may already know the person meant for you, but you just don’t realise it’s them.” George tells me.

What does that mean?
