Slamming the car door shut hard, venting all my anger into it, I stormed down the driveway home, gritting my teeth in anger. Not once looking back at my boyfriend or his ex-girlfriend that I so hate at that time.

Wow, it’s still kinda strange calling Ryan my boyfriend.

I couldn’t believe he hadn’t protested when she brought up her ‘brilliant’ idea of dropping me off first before taking her to a grocery store after we both agreed to stay together at my place. It was as if he was picking her over me! Or did he still have feelings for her?

Maybe we started too soon.

He only broke up with her a week ago, so maybe he wasn’t totally over her yet.

He yelled, “I love you,” but he didn’t get any response from me as I angrily shut the front door close.

Jenny probably was smirking in satisfaction while Ryan remained ignorant of her scheming.

I should have said something in the car, but that would have made me sound like an offensive jealous bitch to Ryan. He believed Jenny wanted to be his friend. But obviously, she wanted more than that, but he doesn’t know that. So I had to show him that being friends with Jenny would be nearly impossible if he wanted to be with me.

A smirk made its way on my lips when a bright idea popped into my head.

Not only Ryan can make friends with an ex-lover.

Almost two hours later, I laid sprawled on the couch dressed in a cream-colored sweater and grey sweatpants, chewing away on popcorn, and watching cartoons. Mum and dad still weren’t back from work, and I was beyond bored sitting all by myself. I should probably use this time to get some homework done, but I’m too lazy to do that now.

It’s not so great being the only child at home. I miss Jax. I wonder when he’ll come to visit again.

Being all by myself is making me think about Ryan and his bitch of an ex. I’ve been sulking ever since I came home.

I suddenly heard the sound of a car pulling up in our driveway. I think mum’s home. I patiently waited for her to soon stroll in through the front door, but that never happened.

Instead, I heard the doorbell go off and wondered who it was. I didn’t order pizza, so who could it be?

I dragged my lazy ass to the door, trying to fix my messy hair on the way.

However, I wasn’t expecting who I saw when I swung open the door. Ryan.

He was dressed as he was when he had dropped me and rode off with Jenny. A guilty smile also on his lip.

I was slightly embarrassed as I looked a mess right now. My hair all over the place and popcorn crumbs on my sweater and my face.

I tried to act nonchalant though and shrugged like nothing was wrong, before walking back to the couch.

“I know you’re mad about earlier, but Jenny meant no harm. She didn’t know I planned on staying here with you, and I couldn’t just say no to her.” He started to rant as he closed the door and walked in behind me.

“She just wants to be friends with you too.” He added as he sat beside me on the couch.

I couldn’t help but scoff, internally. She just wants to be friends. Yeah, right. Like Jenny would want to be friends with me.

I didn’t face him yet but kept my attention on the TV, scrolling through all the channels. I tried to keep my cool facade on even though inside I was seething.

I recollected what I had planned before and had to stop the devious smirk from appearing onto my lips.

“Samantha...” He sighed when I didn’t utter a word to him.

“It’s okay, Ryan. I understand.” I said while forcing a small smile at him.

He looked stunned for a second before shaking it off.

“R... really?!” He stuttered out doubtfully.

“Yeah.” I brightly smiled at him and watched him do the same, as he sighed in relief. “I mean, it’s just like Trevor and me,” I added.

The smile fell from his lips as he furrowed his eyebrows, confused. I turned back to the TV, hiding the smirk playing on my lips.

“What?” He blinked and asked, still looking confused.

“Oh, you know, we’re also friends like you and Jenny are. Not letting our failed relationship getting in the way. We’re even planning on seeing a movie together tomorrow night.” I shrugged nonchalantly before turning back to the TV.

He was silent for a while, but I could feel his burning stare on my face. I glanced at him through the corner of my eyes and could see his fist beginning to clench, and his face slowly contorting in anger. Good. Now he knows how I felt.

“You’re kidding, right?” He asked in a dangerously low tone.

Putting on an innocent act, I rotated my head to him, feigning ignorance.

“About what?” I asked while blinking my eyes innocently up at him.

“You know what I’m talking about.” He snapped all of a sudden as he pulled me by my wrist. “You’re not going anyway with him. I won’t allow it.”

“And why is that? Didn’t you just go grocery shopping with Jenny?” I snapped back at him, letting my anger show through this time.

“That’s different...” He tried to defend himself, raking his fingers through his hair in frustration

“It’s not different, and you know that!” I angrily yelled out. Our breaths were coming out in pants now as we glared at each other. “How do you think I felt today when you left me like that. Imagine if I had done that to you with Trevor, how would you have felt, Ryan?” I watched a guilty expression began to etch on his face as realization dawned on him. He’d hurt me, and he hadn’t even known it until now.

I also realized something then, Jenny was winning. Without knowing it, we’d already fought over her twice. And it was only our first day of being together. Now I knew what Alex and Jane had meant. I shouldn’t let her come between us.

“Ryan...” I sighed, staring at him while he kept looking the other way. “I know you think of her as your friend and all that, but she’s not mine and may never be,” I tried to explain.

“Hey...look at me.” I grabbed his jaw so he could face me with his warm brown eyes that I love so much. They were filled with a lot of emotions right now as they stared back at me, guilt, confusion, love...

“I’m not gonna dictate who you can be friends with or not. I don’t want anything or anyone coming between us. But never make the mistake of choosing her over me again. Never!” I emphasized the last part.

He nodded understandingly before a smile slowly appeared on his lips.

“I’m sorry, babe.” He reached for me and pulled me on his lap to straddle him. “I never intended for it to look that way. I could never choose her over you.” He took my hand and placed a kiss on it. “Never.” He whispered like a promise.

“It’s okay.” I could feel the heat crawling up my neck and making me blush beet red at how romantic he got all of a sudden.

“But...” His eyes suddenly focused on me with such intensity, I had to swallow. “You’re never going anywhere with any other guy who isn’t me. Promise me that.” He snarled. And when I hesitated, he narrowed his eyes at me. Oh, so he could drop Jenny off at home and take her to wherever she wanted, but I can’t go see a movie with a guy friend. Unbelievable!

For his amusement, however, I agreed.

“I promise you possessive bastard.” I wrapped my arm around his neck and placed my forehead against his.

“But I’m your possessive bastard.” He winked as he placed a peck on my lips, which led to another before deepening the kiss. “Also. Whenever I tell you that I love you, I expect you to say it back.” He reminded me about earlier, when I didn’t give him a response. “I love you.” He whispered out.

“I love you too.” I was probably smiling like an idiot now.

I’m glad we worked things out. Being in a relationship was hard. One day and we had argued so much and all about one girl. Jenny. She was beginning to be a pain in the neck.

And I didn’t want to give her any more satisfaction by letting her come between Ryan and me. I just had to put my trust in him and hope he wouldn’t break my heart.

“Now...about what you promised me in class.” He smirked like the devil he was.
