Chapter Seventeen
The school day ended and Cole quickly raced out of the school building to his car. He planned to sit there and wait until his mate left the school grounds so he could follow her.
He had just gotten into his car and put the keys in the ignition when his passenger door opened and Zain climbed in.
“Man today just all round sucked, I got in to trouble in almost every freaken class.” He said shaking his head. “I’m surprised I didn’t end up with a detention.” Zain looked over at Cole who was sitting there staring out the front window looking at the school building. “Er…man I’m here now so you can start the car and drive away from here”
Cole looked over at Zain “Sorry man, but I’m not going home just yet.
“O….K” Zain said when he noticed Cole had started to stare at the school building again. “Than do you mind telling me what we are doing instead, because I gotta tell ya staring at the school isn’t what I would consider fun at all”
Cole rolled his eyes “I’m waiting for my mate to leave and then I plan on following her” he tells Zain.
“Oh” Zain said frowning “why?”
Cole rolled his eyes “Because I want to find out who she is, where she live. Look if you’re not up to it I’m sure there are still some pack members around still who could give you a lift back to the pack house.” Cole said sighing.
“Nah man I’m good, I’m actually looking forward to seeing this side of you.” Zain said.
Cole looked at him and raised an eyebrow “What side?”
Zain gestured at Cole with his hand “Stalker style side” He said before bursting out laughing.
Cole ignored him and looked back out the window just in time to see his mate walked out of the school building, with Mr Mathews by her side.
Cole let out a growl, he took a deep breath and tried to calm his wolf.
“There not very affectionate towards each other.” Zain said beside him.
“What! Cole growled.
“Calm down man” Zain said as he shifted over in his seat so he could be further away from Cole’s wolf who he could see was fighting him for control. “I just mean that don’t really look like a couple. They don’t even hold hands.”
Cole looked over at his mate and Mr Mathews and realised Zain was right. “Maybe the school doesn’t know they are dating and they are trying to keep it a secret.”
“Yeah I bet that’s what it is” Zain said nodding his head “Maybe we should let it slip to the school?”
“No” Cole said shaking his head “You could get my mate into trouble.”
“Yeah, I guess your right”
Cole watched as his mate and fiancé got into a red truck and drove off out of the parking lot. Cole waited a few seconds before starting his car and following them.
His mate’s car drove to the edge of town, turned down a side street, and stopped in front of a rundown house.
“Man what a dump, surely they don’t live here.” Zain said letting out a soft whistle from between his teeth.
Cole pulled the car over a fair way up from the house his mate had pulled into.
Cole looked the small house over, the white boards were almost completely black from dirt and mould, and the tin roof looked to be completely rusted. The railing around the small veranda out the front was no longer attached to the house and was lying in the weeded garden below. It did not look stable enough for anyone to live in.
“Maybe they like to renovate” Cole suggested.
Zain shifted in his seat as he looked around the street. “It’s pretty isolated around here, what building are in this street look to be closed down and deserted. Why would they choose to live here?”
Cole pulled his car back onto the road
“Hey I thought you wanted to spy on them, why are we driving away?” Zain asked.
“Because like you said the street is deserted, my car would stand out like a sore thumb parked here.” He drove to the end of the street and pulled his car into one of the abandoned homes driveway.
Turning of the ignition, he looked over at Zain “What now?” Zain asked him.
Cole sighed. “I really don’t know man, I didn’t really think this through.”
“We could try to sneak back up there on foot and find somewhere to hide, I’m sure we would still be able to hear what they say in the house.”
Cole nodded his head “It’s worth a try.”
They got out of the car and made their way back up towards where his mate was, there were a couple of over grown bushes around the front and side of the house, if they could get to one of them unseen they would be able to hide there.
They reached the house next door to his mate, which looked just as run down and ducked down beside it.
“Why don’t we break into this house and watch from the side window?” Zain suggested
Cole smiled at him “I knew I brought you along for a reason.”
Zain playfully punched Cole on the arm as they walked back towards the opposite side of the house. It had a couple of broken windows so they climbed in through them. Once inside they made their way to Cole’s mate house side of the house and quietly opened a window.
“What do you mean you don’t know?” Cole heard a man’s voice say as soon as they window was opened.
“Exactly that, I don’t know” He heard his mate say.
“That’s not good enough. Find out and don’t come back and see me until you do.” A man’s voice said harshly.
Cole could feel his wolf start to stir not liking the sound of the man tone.
“Yes sir” His mate said softly.
“And what about you?” The man’s voice asked.
‘I managed to find some plans, I have only looked at them briefly so I’m not too sure what they have to show us.” Mr Mathew’s voice said.
“Good, let me know if you find anything we can use” The man’s voice said.
It went quite in the house after that, Zain looked over at Cole “What do you think they were talking about?”
Cole shrugged “Who knows? Could be anything”
About ten minutes later Coles mate and Mr Mathews walked out of the house and got into their car before driving away.
“Should we follow them?” Zain asked.
Cole who was still staring at the run down house shook his head “No I want to know who it was they were talking to too.” He told Zain.
Zain scratched his head but didn’t say anything. They sat there staring at the house for so long it started to get dark.
“What are you boys doing here staring at my house?” A voice said from behind them said. Making both Cole and Zain jump in fright.
Cole was so shocked that he didn’t hear the man approach that he was speechless.
“Er…er…er..w.we heard it was haunted and wanted to see for ourselves” Zain stuttered as the man who looked to be in his fifties stood there eying them up and down.
Cole looked at Zain with a look of disbelief on his face. “Where the hell did that idea come from?” He asked him through the mind link.
Zain shrugged his shoulders. He didn’t looked at Cole instead he kept his eyes on the older man standing in front of them.
“Ghosts? You have got to be kidding, kids these days.” The man grumbled. “Well I can honestly say there are no ghost in my home, so you boys run along.” The man said, his voice didn’t sound as threatening now.
“Yes sir” Zain said as he scrambled to his feet and pulling a still shocked Cole up with him. “Sorry sir” Zain said.
They quickly made there retreat and took off running to Cole’s car.
It wasn’t until they were back on the road driving towards the pack house when they finally started talking.
“How the hell did a human sneak up on us?” Cole asked, .
“I don’t know man, but that man was seriously creepy.” Zain replied.
They both looked at each other and burst out laughing.
“Ghost, seriously man?”
Zain shook his head “Hey you weren’t going to answer him so I had to come up with something.”
“I was too busy trying to work out how the old man snuck up on us like that.” Cole said in his defence.
“Yeah that was some mad ninja skills there.” Zain replied
Cole snorted but didn’t say anything to that. He continued to drive along the road that takes them to the pack house.
