*Clarke Griffin always hated the night shift- until now*
***
Clarke yawned.
It was beyond ridiculous to begin a shift at 11pm. Especially when you had been out all day.
But she needed that night pay to make rent this month. And so with an energy drink in hand she entered the hospital through the back doors.
The usual sounds of the room flooded her ears. There was a child crying- always, coughing, the beep of the heart monitors, the sound of someone tapping their pen.
She moved toward the desk. Leaning against it was a tired looking Jasper Jordan
"Clarkeee!" He greeted her with feigned enthusiasm.
"Long day?" She chuckled, patting the boy softly on the back.
"The longest- two children with marbles stuck up their nose." He laughed, placing his head on the counter.
"Oof." Clarke made a sympathetic sound in the back of her throat.
She moved into the staff room then.
Raven Reyes lay sleeping on a couch, her head tipped precariously over the edge.
"Working a double tonight Reyes?" Clarke said loudly.
"What?" The girl woke, sitting up quickly.
"I mean yeah." She said, rubbing her eyes.
"You ready for the most exciting overnight of your life?" She asked, jokingly.
"God no." Clarke groaned, downing the rest of her drink.
She grimaced.
"I took this shift from Harper. If I didn't need rent money I wouldn't even be here." She whispered.
"I'm flattered." Raven joked, standing up to kiss the girl on the cheek mockingly.
"It's 2 to 11. We better clock on." Raven instructed.
Clarke sighed heavily.
"Guess we should."

It had been two hours and Clarke Griffin was bored out of her mind.
She sat at the desk, staring at the charts of the three patients that resided in the emergency room.
Moments later the doors we pushed open.
A loud group of young men entered, hollering and shouting.
Clarke was up and on the floor in a second.
She moved toward the boys with a barely contained rage.
"Quiet." She hissed.
The group of boys stopped abruptly.
"If none of you are in immediate danger you need to leave." She said professionally.
A boy exited the group.
He held out his arm.
It was heavily bruised, the bone protruding under his skin.
"I dunno does this look immediate to you?" He joked, grimacing.
Clarke was speechless.
"This way." She said quickly, leading the boy into a cubicle and shutting the curtain.
The other boys settled in the waiting room then.
Clarke watched as the boy sat on the hospital bed.
He was tall, and handsome, with brown curly hair and a crooked smile.
"Hi, there." He said, slurring his words.
"Hello." Clarke laughed.
"How did this happen?" She asked, moving forward.
She touched the boy's arm. He barely flinched, his face only contorting slightly.
Clarke looked up worriedly.
"You can't feel that?" She whispered.
The boy grinned.
"Nope. But it might have something to do with Miller's homemade moonshine." He chuckled.
"Miller is one of your friends?" She asked, placing his arm down softly.
Bellamy nodded, his head rocking back and forth as he did so.
"Exactly how much did you have to drink?" Clarke asked worriedly then.
She placed her fingers to the wrist on his good hand.
"I-uh- a few." He sighed, heavily.
"Wanna talk about it?" Clarke asked nonchalantly, bending Bellamy's arm again.
He cursed aloud.
"That hurt?" She asked, smiling.
"Glad to see you enjoy my pain." He chuckled, looking up at her.
Clarke looked into his eyes then. Deep brown, kind.
Clarke was reminded of another set of eyes, a man she once loved. Taken from her when she was much too young.
It was what inspired her to become a nurse. To save lives.
She was taken back, and suddenly she was holding Finn's limp hand, begging him to come back to her and knowing that he wouldn't.
Tears formed in her eyes.
"I'm going to get the doctor so we can do some xrays." She whispered, fleeing from the room.
The girl lent her head against the cool surface of the counter, tears running down her face.
"Clarke?" Jasper had a soft hand on her back.
"I need- I need you to take the broken arm in room 3. I can't- I can't work with him." Clarke whimpered.
"Did he do something or say something?" Jasper said warily.
"No no. He's lovely. He's funny, and laid back and charming. He- he has these brown eyes and I just..." Clarke choked.
"Finn." Jasper said, realisation lacing his tone.
"Clarke, you have to go back in there." He whispered.
"No- no I can't." Clarke replied, wiping her eyes.
"Clarke, Finn died 8 years ago. You need to allow yourself to move on." He said, softly.
Clarke nodded.
She knew it was true.
She knew that the boy in there could be her salvation.
Could be something that finally made her smile.
That made her forget the pain she held on to for 8 years, or at least move past it.
She had tried with others. A beautiful, strong girl called Lexa had been her lifeline, but she too had been yanked away.
From then on there had been a series of meaningless flings, anything to try to take the pain away.
But none of them compared to how that boy's eyes made her feel.
She steeled herself and returned to the boy.
"Okay Bellamy, we're going to take you down to x-ray." She heard a voice say confidently.
She pulled back the curtain to see her co-worker Echo standing over him.
"Echo, this is my patient." Clarke said quietly.
"Considering you didn't even take his name I'm surprised you'd claim his as your patient." She bit.
Clarke looked from Echo to Bellamy, he was no longer wearing his smile.
Clarke was determined to see that smile again.
"He's mine." She said more confidently now.
"He's mine."
***
"Okay Bellamy we're going to have to straighten the bone before we can set it, and I'm not gunna lie it's gunna hurt like a bitch." Clarke explained.
Bellamy grimaced.
"Let's get on with it then." He whispered.
Clarke looked up at Dr. Green, nodding to him curtly.
"Hold my hand." Bellamy said, scared.
Clarke obliged, taking the boy's good hand in her own.
"It's going to be okay." She whispered.
"Just look at me."
Before Bellamy could think, a huge pain struck his arm.
He cried out, clasping Clarke's hand tightly.
"It's over. It's done. You're okay." She reassured him.
She lay him back down then, stroking his forehead comfortingly.
"You're okay."
***
Bellamy watched as Clarke wrapped his arm slowly, the doctor supervising as she did so.
"Lovely work, Clarke." The doctor said, quietly.
"Thanks Dr. Green." She said, a blush forming in her face.
Bellamy watched the hue run to her cheeks.
God she was beautiful.
Possibly the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.
When his arm was finished being wrapped the doctor left, and Clarke and Bellamy we're finally alone.
"So..."
"So..."
The both began to speak at the same time.
An awkward chuckle filled the room.
Bellamy took the lead.
"So when do you get off?" He said, nervously.
"Wouldn't you like to know." Clarke joked, before releasing how unprofessional she was being.
Bellamy's mouth hung open.
"Well now I gotta know." He said, sweetly.
"The night shift finished 30 minutes ago." She sighed.
"And your still here?" Bellamy asked.
Clarke looked at him, a smile forming on her lips.
"Yeah I'm still here."
***
Clarke would stay in hospital with Bellamy for another hour before he was cleared to leave.
His friends long gone, had left him stranded and so, Clarke offered her car's services to him.
They were parked in his driveway now, staring at each other, daring one another to make the first move.
"Well thanks for saving my life." Bellamy whispered, leaning toward Clarke.
"I didn't- save your life. You're just doped up on pain meds." Clarke giggled.
She felt strangely giddy with him.
"Well, either way..." Bellamy began.
Before he could finish his sentence Clarke's lips were on his.
Soft and sweet, Bellamy noticed she tasted like red bull.
Clarke noticed that he still tasted like moonshine.
She chuckled.
"No good?" Bellamy said, worriedly.
Clarke smiled, touching the side of his face.
"No, not good," She joked, laughing at the look on his face.
"Perfect."
