ZARA STIRS FROM HER NAP, blinking her eyes groggily. it is one of the naps where she doesn't know whether it's the next day or 3 am. the soft sunlight filtering through her bedroom curtains tells her that it's the late afternoon hour. she realizes she has dozed off longer than intended. as she stretches her limbs and sits up in bed, a faint memory tugs at the edges of her consciousness.
something she's forgetting.

matt.
him coming over to hang out with xavier. the thought of matt in general makes her roll her eyes. especially when he's making all these stupid comments in her instagram dm.
pushing the covers aside, zara swings her legs over the edge of the bed and stands up, feeling a slight dizziness wash over her momentarily. low iron gets her good every single time. she steadies herself against the bedside table before taking a deep breath and heading towards the door.
as she steps into the hallway, her senses go on high alert, listening for any signs of activity. but all she can hear is the quiet hum of the house, undisturbed by voices or laughter. a sense of relief washes over her as she realizes that xavier's room is empty. he and matt aren't here.
the nap trick did indeed come clutch!
with a small smile, zara makes her way to the kitchen, her stomach grumbling in protest at the lack of food. she opens the fridge door and peers inside, surveying the contents. there are some leftovers from last night's dinner, a carton of eggs, and a few other odds and ends.
this is the real college experience. living with your siblings and having literally nothing in the house.
she reaches for a container of sliced fruit, considering her options. maybe she can whip up a quick salad or a smoothie to tide her over until dinner.
zara reaches into the pocket of her hoodie for her phone to check the time, but her fingers grasp at empty air. she furrows her brow in confusion, realizing she must have left it on the nightstand before her nap. with a resigned sigh, she retraces her steps back to her room, the soft carpeting cushioning her footsteps.
upon reaching the nightstand, zara grabs her phone and unlocks the screen. she quickly navigates to her monopoly go app, just to see if any of her properties have been landed on while she was asleep. as she scrolls through the board, her attention fully absorbed by the random player who broke all of her shields, she fails to notice her surroundings.
without warning, she collides with something solid. here she go.
zara stumbles backward, holding her arms out as she struggles to regain her balance. of course, she trips on one of xavier's shoes because he just doesn't know how to put things where they belong. just as she's about to hit the ground, she feels strong hands wrap around her waist, pulling her back to her feet. startled, she looks up, her eyes locking onto a familiar arm adorned with tattoos—a lighthouse, followed by a delicate seashell.
fucking hell. it's matt.
for a moment, zara's mind goes blank, her gaze fixed on the intricate designs inked onto his skin. he's gotten a few new ones since she's last looked up close. then, she realizes the situation she's in and quickly averts her eyes.
it's still matt.
zara's annoyance flares as matt's smug voice breaks through her thoughts. "wow, this is really cliché," he says, a smirk playing on his lips. "even for you, zara." they're currently standing a lot closer than they should be, with matt's hands on either side of her waist.
zara pushes him off, causing him to take a step back and release his grip on her "this is really stalker-ish," she retorts, her tone laced with sarcasm. "even for you matthew."
zara brushes past matt, her shoulder colliding with his in annoyance as she strides into the kitchen. she returns to her container of fruit, trying to ignore him. doesn't worth though since matt follows after her.

"what's with the government name thing?" matt asks, his tone laced with amusement as he leans against the countertop, his hands on either side of him. his proximity is stirring up memories she'd rather forget.
zara sighs, rolling her eyes at his persistence. "i'm doing it so you don't get the wrong idea," she retorts, her voice sharp. "we're not as close as you seem to think we are."
matt raises an eyebrow, his smirk widening as he leans in closer, his bare chest inches away from her. she remembers "we were pretty close just a few moments ago," he says, his voice low and teasing. "but anyway, that kind of defeats the purpose a little." matt shrugs. "hearing my full name coming from you is kind of hot."
zara scoffs, shaking her head at his audacity. "you are such a fucking weirdo," she retorts, turning her attention back to the fruit in front of her. "the school has psychiatrists for the athletes. maybe the hits from hockey are starting to take a toll on your brain."
matt's smirk only widens in response. he groans and throws his head back slightly. "why don't you like flirting with me anymore?" he asks, his tone playful but zara can tell it's a genuine question. matt does not understand the concept of being lotal. "you having a boyfriend shouldn't take away from my fun too."
zara bristles at his words, her annoyance reaching new heights. is this guy actually serious? "every time you open your mouth, i feel worse and worse for your hoes," she says with a shake of her head. "do us all a favor and just shut the fuck up." she throws piece of kiwi in her mouth and looks at matt. "and put a shirt on too you psycho."
with that, zara grabs the entire container of fruit, just wanting to leave matt's presence. she's not even halfway out of the kitchen when she feels matt's hand on her lower back, a gesture that makes her skin feel hot under his touch. she doesn't want to, but her body just betrays her under his touch.
she freezes, shooting him a glare over her shoulder. matt, not even looking at her, plucks a strawberry from the container and throws it into his mouth with a smirk. "you know," he says, chewing thoughtfully, "i've been thinking."
zara raises an eyebrow, stepping away from matt. "thinking? that's a new one for you!"
"maybe i should keep my shirt off more often. seems like you're enjoying the view." ignoring her jab, matt continues, "seems like you just can't control yourself around me."
zara rolls her eyes, resisting the urge to throw the container of fruit at him and his stupid smirk. "you're delusional," she mutters, turning to leave once more.
as she rounds the corner to head back to her room, matt's voice follows after her, taunting and arrogant. "still hotter than your boyfriend though," he calls out. zara rolls her eyes and just trudges her way back to her room.
she will not be leaving until matt leaves her house. she's sick of him.
