This isn't really considered racist and it's okay to avoid this rule, but it helps make coloring a lot more realistic! You see, people tend to have palms of hands and soles of feet with colors lighter than the main color of the skin, because there is less melanin there. It's true for all skin colors, but more noticeable in darker skin colors.
