CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Beginne am Anfang

I get up and open the window and grab the blue box with a silver ribbon. I looked at it suspiciously, wondering who could have left it there. I cautiously opened it and found a beautiful silver locket necklace with a tiny engraving of a black rose. I have never seen anything like it before.

But what intrigued me more was the note that was enclosed with it. It read:

"Happy Birthday, Annabelle.

I hope this gift brings you as much joy as you bring others. May this locket always remind you that beauty can even be in the darkness."

The locket itself was simple yet elegant, and the black rose on it was so intricately designed that it almost looked real. Who could have sent it? I can't even recognize the handwriting. I placed the note and the neckless on my dressing table and decided to go back to sleep.

I was sound asleep in my bed when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I groaned and tried to turn around, but someone pulled my blankets away, exposing me to the chilly air. I opened my eyes to see my older brother, James, standing at the foot of my bed with a mischievous grin on his face.

"Happy birthday, Belle!" he chirped. "Sirius and I have a special birthday prank planned for you."

"What is it?" I asked, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.

"It's a surprise," Sirius replied from the doorway, a twinkle in his eye.

I groaned again, but I couldn't help but smile. James and Sirius always made my birthdays special, even if it meant waking me up early with a prank.

As I got dressed, my parents came in with a stack of presents and a homemade birthday cake. We all sat down at the table for breakfast, where James and Sirius bickered about everything from Quidditch to who had the better taste in music. My parents smiled indulgently, used to their antics by now.

After breakfast, James and Sirius led me outside to the backyard, where they had set up a surprise scavenger hunt for me. I followed the clues they had left, giggling and grinning the whole way. At the end, a giant present wasAs the sun began to set, my friends started arriving at my birthday party, one by one. The backyard was decorated with twinkling fairy lights, colorful streamers, and a big birthday banner with my name on it. The air was filled with laughter and excitement as we all gathered to celebrate.

Lily, Marlene, Varun, Hugh, Ariana, Remus, and a few other close friends were among the guests. They all came bearing gifts and well wishes, and I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude for their presence.

The food spread was a feast for the senses, with a variety of delicious snacks, finger foods, and refreshing drinks. My mom had even baked a special birthday cake adorned with candles that spelled out my age. We all indulged in the treats, chatting and catching up on each other's lives.

As the evening progressed, we played various party games, including charades and a magical scavenger hunt. We laughed and competed, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Lily and Marlene, who were known for their competitive spirit, were wildly enthusiastic, while Remus and Hugh added their witty remarks, keeping everyone entertained.

Amidst the games and laughter, James, my older brother's best friend, approached Lily for what seemed like the hundredth time. He had always had a crush on her, but she had consistently turned him down in the past. However, James was determined, waiting for me, wrapped in sparkly pink paper.

I tore off the wrapping paper to find a brand-new broomstick inside. I squealed with delight, thanking my family for the best birthday ever. Even James and Sirius managed to put their bickering aside and give me a hug. Hello, ladies," he said, flashing a winning smile. "I have a question for Lily."

Everyone groaned and rolled their eyes, knowing what was coming. This was not the first time James had tried to ask Lily out, and everyone knew it probably wouldn't be the last. Lily looked up from the game and raised an eyebrow at James, clearly unimpressed. "What do you want, James?" she asked. "I was just wondering, Lily," he began, sounding far too rehearsed, "if you would like to go out with me sometime." Lily sighed, exasperated, clearly not in the mood for James' antics. "James, I've told you a million times, I'm not interested," she said, looking back down at the game board.

Despite the rejection, James didn't let it dampen the mood of the party. He joined in the games and laughter with the rest of us, and we all appreciated his effort to keep the party going smoothly.

As the night wore on, we gathered around a bonfire, roasting marshmallows and making s'mores. The fire's warm glow and my dear friends' company made it a magical moment. We shared stories, jokes, and memories, creating an unforgettable evening.

As the party ended, my friends hugged me tightly, wishing me a happy birthday again. I felt grateful and loved, knowing that I had the best friends anyone could ask for. Even James, who had faced rejection once again, gave me a heartfelt hug and wished me a happy birthday.

As I blew out the candles on my cake, I made a silent wish, thanking the universe for the gift of true friendship. It had been an incredible birthday celebration.
