If it's too good to be true, it probably is.

I recently received a private message from an individual representing a new reader/writer platform similar to wattpad. They asked about featuring The Shadow Walker there, with the possibility of being paid. I was interested, so I looked them up.

I found an article by a brave soul who pursued an identical approach by the same company. He didn't conclude if it was legitimate or not, but too many details didn't sit right. Too many loopholes the "publisher" could use to their advantage.

I am NOT saying this is a scam. If any of you have been approached also, I'm not telling you what to decide. I'm saying choose very, very carefully.

Most of us on wattpad are dreamers. We're here to try our hand at writing, find an audience. Some of us have been successful. Some of us are trying new things to create that spark. But ALL of us have that thirst for success. This is a beautiful thing that unites unlikely friends. But if we don't stick together and look before we fall, that thirst will be our undoing.

I've been learning the craft of writing for almost ten years. Taking childish stories to writing groups and watching adults try to stomach my fantastical scribbles. The last six years, I've gone to writers conferences, met with agents and publishers, had my work rejected or ignored. What interest I generated came with a price tag - writing things like book proposals, and heavy doses of editing.

From one dreamer to the next, heed my words: Success is NEVER that easy. Be patient. You CAN make it without settling for second (or thirtieth) best.

Again, I'm not saying it's a scam. It could be legitimate. If I start hearing stories of this working for other people, I'll reevaluate.

All I'm saying is, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, check if duck is in season.

If you have any questions or feedback, please reach out to me via private message. I look forward to hearing from my fellow dreamers.

I received a similar message from different representatives for the same company (Dreame) on both Wattpad and FanFiction.Net. It felt more of like a sneaky way to get more traffic/writers to their website than a legit inquiry. Like they find people who have decent traffic on their stories and try to get them to come over to their site with the promise of possible income, but really they’re just trying to advertise their site and increase their own traffic.

hi amariel (should i call you that?) ! if you've forgotten who i am, i was an avid reader of the shadow walker and we talked some time before :) i'm hoping to make more friends and connect with some other lord of the rings fans on here and so i'm just reaching out to say hi! i hope you don't find it weird or anything, but i just recall having awesome conversations with you (albeit short) and wanted to reach out !!

i was planning to read starless but unfortunately got super busy and became unable to read anything for a long time...but hopefully i will be able to read it soon! fingers crossed :))

@princesswithashotgun sorry for the late reply! i’m still working on a girl drops into middle earth fanfiction, and have written close to half of the first book. for some reason i’m not yet ready to post it and at this rate i think i might finish it before beginning to post. it’s beginning to get really complicated but i’m loving every moment of writing. are you still working on starless?

@aviien hi there! I'm glad you reached out, to be honest I feel like the fandom is kind of lethargic right now hopefully things will pick up though! You working on any new fanfiction?
