Iain McGill is a veterinary surgeon involved in the science, politics and practice of vetting. He has deep insight into the animal world and a love and care for all animal life, domestic and wild, backed up by years of research and campaigning. Nearly everything he does either professionally or creatively has a link, however tangential, back to an animal, welfare or conservation issue. These are his passions.
A creative at heart, McGill uses wit and playfulness to draw attention to the animals we share the world with, to immerse us in their voices and open our minds to how we treat them.
A unique and formative experience from McGill's life was his role in exposing the BSE cover-up by the Government in the mid 1990s. More recently he has campaigned and presented scientific research against the badger cull scandal of today. In a media whirlwind in the summer of 2021, Iain went to the wire to try and protect Geronimo the Alpaca, as well as helping to rescue 67 people and more than 200 dogs and cats from Kabul as the city fell to the Taliban. These events have informed the narrative of his book Loki the Lockdown Dog - along with thirty years of healing his animal patients.
It is not easy being a visionary vet in a time when the food and agriculture system has untrammelled power, yet McGill's story gives us hope that change is more than possible. We can imagine what animals might say to us if only they could. Lockdown was transformative for many and a struggle for most, but if you were lucky enough to have the company of a dog, you'll have noticed how much warmer the world feels.
