Barry Hayes was born in Aurora, Illinois but grew up in the mountains and coalfields of Southwest Virginia. He lived in Russell County, attended Castlewood High School, and a few years after graduating, he moved to Alabama. There he began pursuing a degree in English at Jacksonville State University. Barry later began writing with his longtime friend, Jeremy Hicks on a shared project they called Cycle of Ages Saga: Finders Keepers.

Barry and Jeremy meshed their ideas together and wrote a screenplay (The Cycle of Ages Saga: Finders Keepers) to introduce their world they call Faltyr™. As a result, their first novel is to be published by Kerlak Publishing (Dark Oak Press and Media) in 2013.

As co-founder of Broke Guys Productions, Barry co-wrote three more as-of-yet unproduced screenplays. They include the first sequel to the CoAS: Finders Keepers, a road trip comedy entitled Across the Border: South to Alaska and a darkly comedic horror tale about meth zombies plaguing a trailer park in Alabama, currently entitled Zombies on Ice. This screenplay placed as a Top Finalist in the 2011 Cherub Films Horror Screenplay Competition under the title Night of the Living Rednecks.
