Thoughts:
This novel is more about wars, NOT romance. Before I dropped this series (from what I remember) there was none.
I dropped it not because it wasn't good, but I don't have the heart to finish it, I just couldn't.
Ok. Main reason I watched and read this is because MC is the type of character I like. Lazy, intelligent, calculative, OP (can either be in intelligence and strength or just in intelligence), has a fun personality, and is playboy (only enjoyed it in the anime/manga lol.)
I enjoyed watching the anime so I read the manga. I enjoyed the manga so I read the novel. I very much did not enjoy the novel!
This story has MAJOR tragedy. Like bitch, what the fuck? Author killed of one of my favorite characters. Which made me very sad as at the end of the manga, that person was very much alive!
I can handle death, but I couldn't handle hers/his, so I dropped it.
Anywayyysss I'm not too fond of Japanese novels but I really recommend this.

If you like stories with characters who die, read the novel.
If you like stories with characters who don't (debatable), read the manga. MC is perfectly what the novel described him. Not very handsome but charming. You could see a bit more of his playboy side. (He likes MILF's lol, I can relate)
If you like moving pictures, watch the anime. There are extra scenes about MC's childhood not seen in the manga. Because of the art style, MC looks quite handsome..
Sighhhh** I want to erase that scene from my memory.
