So starting with the basic of basics, let us first talk about what is an otaku. There are two meanings of otaku,

1. The literal meaning of otaku in japan

(in Japan) a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills.

Which literally translates as an:

Person who is obsessed with anime or gaming who has no social skills. He is basically considered as a geek.

2. The well-known meaning around foreign countries

A person who loves and enjoy watching anime and reading manga. This kind of meaning is more toned than the actual japanese meaning if otaku.

Fun fact : in Japan it is actually not a compliment to be called otaku. Being called otaku is actually offensive for it being known for not helping the society.
