Chapter 4 -- Caramel Mocchiato

"I don't want you to hate me." Riley said to me as he pulled up the circle driveway of the Martinez mansion.

"I don't." I replied.

I had to keep in mind that me moving away would be the best for my family. It was time they get back to their normal ways; the way that doesn't include a depressed twenty year old girl.

I had stopped by Heather’s house and told her the news. She didn’t take it very well. But after a talk from Adam, who was conveniently also there, she decided that it really was the best for me. They both promised to come visit on our hang out days; which was two to three times a week, including the weekends.

My parents had said goodbye to me earlier this morning. They couldn't come drop me off because both of them had work. Riley had taken the day off so he could see me to my new home.

New York, New York was a thirty minute drive from Grand Valley, New Jersey. It was deep in the suburbs of the city, a part where all the rich people lived.

Jason Martinez owned at least fifteen 'Rainforest Cafe's in New York and New Jersey. Both my Uncle Jay and Aunt Stephanie run the business and their son, Max, who was halfway in college for a business major, was the manager of a couple of them.

It was safe to say that they were loaded. Their wallets wouldn't even fit in their pockets if they tried. Them having money didn't make them like the cliché stuck up, snotty, rich people. The Martinez's were good people and I'm not just saying that because they were my family.

I looked up at the three stories, white, Victorian home at the end of the circle drive way. I've only been here a couple of times in my lifetime. Their family usually comes over my home during holidays or celebrations.

"Here we are." Riley said.

"Here we are." I echoed.

My brother turned in his seat to face me. He looked even more sad and worried than usual. "I really hope that this separating helps you.”

“I hope it helps you guys, too.” I said honestly.

“We just want you to get better, Rebecca. I hate seeing my little sister so broken. It’s killing me.” Riley choked out. I’ve never seen my brother cry but this past two years; I’ve seen him shed a tear more than a couple of occasions.

I hated physical interaction but I leaned over and gave my big brother a much needed hug. He was shocked at first but recovered quickly and hugged me back. The two of us broke apart when we heard people approaching.

“Riley! Rebecca!” my Aunt Stephanie yelled from the front porch.

Her tan skin, dark hair, and brown eyes were the exact replica of her younger sister. Following her was her husband and their son. Uncle Jay stood tall with brown hair and brown eyes. Maxwell Martinez looked just like him except he wore his hair a little bit longer.

Max and Riley were known for their mischievous actions and their impressive charms for the opposite sex. If you didn’t know them, you would label them as ‘players’ but to me, they were just over protective older brothers who annoyed and irritated me to no end.

Riley and I got out of the car and were briefly embraced by the trio. I cringed at the touch and I saw their confused expression but decided against commenting on it. The boys and my Uncle helped me get my suitcases out of the trunk and into the enormous home. Inside, Aunt Stephanie had led us to the room I would be staying in. It was the same room I would always stay in whenever I came to visit.

The walls were pale purple and a princess bed sat in the middle of the room. A vanity and two dressers were pressed up against one wall of the room, a bathroom and a walk-in closet were on the other side, and windows with a small entrance to a terrace on another.

The men left all my belongings in the middle of the room and left to show Riley their new electronics in the game room. I walked over to the ceiling to floor length windows and opened up the curtains, letting my room bask in the sunlight.
