Chapter 2 - What Is Love?

I fought the urge to throw up the sandwich I'd had for lunch as Noah shoved his tongue down my throat. He broke away and I wiped the slobber that coated my mouth as he checked his phone. I felt lonliness swirl at my insides and I picked at my nails in boredom. It'd been almost three weeks since I'd seen Chris and I couldn't help but wonder if maybe he was wrong. I mean, I could always head to the record store tomorrow night, but I knew that'd seem like I was stalking him. I pulled out my phone and suddenly, I could hear Noah growling beside me.

"What's your problem?" I furrowed my eyebrows at him as he gave me an evil glare.

"We're gonna make out and your just gonna check your phone like no big deal," he shrugged and took another swig of his beer. The fiery look in his eyes only grew and I couldn't help but notice his own phone dangling at his fingertips.

"Whatever." I rolled my eyes and stood up but he grabbed onto my wrist tightly, twisting it so it caused me to squeal. I winced and stared at the animilastic look streaking across his face.

"Don't you fucking walk away from me," he snapped at me and  suddenly realized the danger of being in his drunken grasp.

"Noah, let me go." I begged slightly, tugging at my wrist but it only hurt more as he tightened his grip.

"What the fuck is your problem?!" I could feel my wrist bruising and the tears sprang to my eyes. I finally yanked it away from him and made space between us where he sat on the gross couch of his dusty basement.

"I'm going out." I stammered and eft the room before he could say anything and quickly got into my car.

I tried to wrap my mind around what exactly had gone down as I put distance between me and him. I'd seen him get mad at me, in fact I agitated him almost always. I'd learned that we were in a sterile relationship from the beginning. I would give him what he wanted and I'd have the security and acceptance of a safe place to go. But I'd started to realize that my safe place wasn't all that safe.

I showed up at Screws when it was already dark. It started off with me just driving around, trying to decide where I wanted to go. I didn't want to go home and I couldn't go back to Noah's. I knew Emily was out and Roxy doesn't like having people over. I tried to remember the last time I didn't feel like a liability to people. So I ended up here.

When I entered, the aroma of alcohol almost overwhelmed me but I ignored it. I pushed my way to the bar and the lipstick waitress came over to me.

"What can I get you?" She smacked her gum at me and I could finally get a good look at her sandy blonde hair and her bright eyes circled with eyeliner.

"Just a water." I scanned around the room to see if Chris was anywhere as she brought me my drink.

"Who you looking for?" She gave me a smile and I felt grateful at the fact her makeup was better done today.

"A friend." I took a sip of my drink as she evaluated me for a moment.

"I'm Lucy." She held out her hand and I shook it, assuming she'd decided I was worth her time to talk to.

"Heather." I smiled back at her and her stiff attitude immediately softened.

"Man, I hope your friend is nice. There's some real deadbeets around here." She gave me a knowing grin and my eyes widened as I quickly shook my head.

"Its not like that." My face heated up as she giggled, enjoying my reaction.

"You're red as a tomato! Hey, its not a crime to have a little crush." She pinched my nose and I was going to deny it again, but cheering erupted from the crowd slowly forming around the stage.
