Gemma Stackhouse was only an eighteen-year-old girl who just entered college. She thought all was well in the world even though vampires existed before her grandmother died. She had been the one to find her.
Now, she was a young girl who couldn't sleep and had nightmares all the time. She felt lost in the world, hopeless. When her sister gets injured by some bull-like creature, she's introduced to a blond Viking vampire. He offers her a job to go to Dallas and locate another vampire named Godric.
Because of the suffocating sadness she feels, she jumps at the opportunity to leave Bon Temps. She just doesn't realize that she's running towards the one person who is just as lost as she is.
