Chapter 7: Sydney?

Shadé

"Gina wants you to clean the bedrooms today."

The moment I heard those words escape Tiffany's mouth, I knew I had to object.

"Wait, me? Tiffany, I-I don't clean bedrooms or bathrooms," I explained, turning my entire body toward her.

"Sorry, Fola," she apologized sheepishly.

I sighed and nodded my head as I began stomping my way toward Gina's office.

I hated being considered a new girl. I hated it so much. The others would make me do tasks that I didn't even know how to do. Such as cleaning the bedrooms or bathroom suites. I didn't know where to put their things. My duties were meant for the rooms on the first floor only.

"Gina--"

"I'm not trying to hear it, Folashadé. I expect the princess and both Princes' rooms and their bathrooms to be spotless in the next two hours," Gina said carelessly as she dialed a number on her office phone. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a phone call to make," she said dismissively without sparing me a single glance.

I pushed myself off of the door frame and trudged my way to the tool closet. It would've been stupid of me to argue with Gina. She seemed like a boss who would fire an employee in a heartbeat.

"Umm, Fola," I heard Tiffany's soft voice say from behind me.

"Yes," I struggled to say as I tried to pull a broom out of the closet. Sadly, my coworkers were very untidy people, yet, we were supposed to be maids.

"Would it be alright if... I helped you... I mean, if--"

"I don't mind. If anything, I'd be happy to have your help," I politely cut her off.

She smiled widely before pulling me into a hug. I didn't know how to respond to such an unexpected reaction. All she did was ask if she could help me and I gave her the permission to do so. Her reason for hugging me was beyond my understanding.

She pulled away from me and smiled once more. "Thank you," she said graciously.

"You're... welcome," I replied with uncertainty.

_______

This didn't make any sense. Why did the maids have to clean while someone watches them? It's uncomfortable and creepy, to know that someone is paying that much attention to you. It's more like a punishment than anything.

Every time I looked over my shoulder or turned around, I could see the intensity in Rodney's gaze. I was tempted to question him, but thought better of it.

Tiffany and I were nearly finished; only having to readjust the drapes around his balcony door. Tiffany insisted on doing so while I collected our tools.

"Excuse me," I heard Rodney call from behind me.

I completely turned around to face him, knowing that looking over your shoulder was a disrespectful way of acknowledging a royal figure.

"Yes, Your Highness," I answered, crossing my hands in front of me and staring blankly at the ground.

"Are you new here? I've never seen you around," he inquired with a genuine interest.

My eyes quickly darted to Tiffany, momentarily turning into slits as I noticed the large grin on her face.

"I am. I was hired nearly a month ago, Sire," I replied, ignoring the rapid beating against my chest.
