INT. HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM
It is November, 1994.
FRANK, a sophomore, is having a bad first day that includes his pencil tip breaking while filling out a form.
Sitting next to him, JOANNA, also a sophomore, pulls out an extra pencil and hands it to him.
Frank mouths “thank you”, and Joanna nods.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - OUTSIDE CAFETERIA
Later that day Frank looks inside the lunchroom. It is packed with students, all in their own groups.
Frank starts to turn away and sees Joanna in the hallway, looking at him.
FRANK
There doesn’t seem to be room for me in there.
Joanna nods, understanding. Her manner is very reserved, but it’s not unfriendly.
JOANNA
It gets pretty crowded.
FRANK
Where do you sit?
JOANNA
I don’t.
She continues walking down the hall.
Frank falls into step beside her.
FRANK
You can tell me to get lost if you want, but you’re the only person who’s even looked at me all day.
Joanna stops and looks at Frank, then nods.
JOANNA
It’s okay.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL, BACK STEPS
It is a very gray and dreary day, and Frank and Joanna are alone outside.
JOANNA
I go to the library a lot. Sometimes I just walk around.
FRANK
What do you eat?
Joanna pulls a sandwich from her coat pocket.
JOANNA
Want half?
FRANK
Thanks.
Joanna breaks the sandwich into two halves and they each take one.
FRANK (CONT’D)
Do you ever go in the cafeteria?
She shakes her head.
JOANNA
It’s too crowded.
FRANK
It looked pretty bad.
JOANNA
They’re building a new school but it won’t be ready before we graduate.
FRANK
They can’t be thrilled to get an extra student.
JOANNA
One more won’t make a difference.
FRANK
No, I won’t.
Frank sounds a little bitter.
JOANNA
I didn’t mean it like that.
