The Battle for freedom

I woke up this time in what looked like a prison, tied up and gagged but then I heard a comforting and familiar voice.

"Maggie, Maggie, are you awake? Can you hear me? You're alright now," It was Derek who just finished untying me and was now hugging me tightly"They.... They killed them," I sobbed into him.

"I know, Max told us everything. Right after he left the room you two were tied up in, he ran to get us. They planned on killing us all during training and when Max told me the had you we all came to get you," He replied. I looked up and saw that the whole team was there. My eyes widened as I saw who else showed up. The door behind my team slammed shut as director Walter walked in.

"The whole team reunited! How exciting! What a pathetic team you all are though. Let's start with Liam. The brat with anger issues. Never happy with anyone, especially himself. Has shooting lightning from your hands made you any better of a person? And Derek! The failure, as I like to call you. Your parents are both superhumans with incredible abilities, yet, you were born powerless. You were such a disappointment that they had Maggie's mother train you to become an assassin since the day you could walk," the director mocked. Derek became tense and I knew the words that were said bothered him, yet he did nothing. "Delilah! You're the secretive one! You've known these people for twelve years yet they know so little about you. At least tell me they know you're parents weren't heroes, but villains you've killed a man, or two, or ten. How well has that bubbly personality of yours been doing at hiding your dark past and inner villain," the director added as tears flew down Delilah's face like a waterfall. "Do I even have to mention you Max! You already know that you're worthless. Not only are you powerless but you weren't trained to be like Derek the failure. All those nights wasted in the training room and you still get kicked out for being useless and fragile"

"No, I'm not any of those horrible things! My power is my intelligence just like Maggie said!" Max rebutted

"Oh please! Speaking of Maggie, the girl who's lost in a never ending daydream. You put a glamour over the world and the people in it. To you, everyone is good and heroic. I'd hate to break it to you, but those comics you read aren't real and those heroes you try to mimic end up dead just like your parents," the director added as I cringed. I broke free from Derek's hold and stood up, face to face with the director.

"You're right, The world isn't as happy of a place as I made it out to be. It's dark, people lie, cheat, and steal. They will seek revenge on whoever they deem worthy but thats exactly why the world needs more people like me. A hero who sees the beauty in people and the world. Someone who does what they feel is morally right. Someone who sticks with what they believe in. Everything you said about us might be true in some way but it doesn't matter because we are a team and we stick together. Liam is brave and level headed, Derek is the closest person to me. He is caring, talented, all around an amazing human and he might be a sarcastic jerk sometimes but he is anything but a failure. Delilah might have had a hard past but that's exactly where it is, the past. She's a much better person than who she was back then and she is not her parents. She is sweet, helpful, and a joy to be around. Max is the smartest person I know. He's determined, hard working, and will fight for what he believes in. To me, these all sound like the characteristics of a hero. Whether they be from a comic book or not, each of them is a hero. They are more than their insecurities and they are more than a weapon to toy around with," I argued. My team looked shocked and amazed. Delilah stopped crying and her hands formed a bright purple glow. We all formed a circle around director Walter. Sweat formed on his eyebrow as he raised his arm and pushes a red button on his watch.

"I've set this place to self destruct so if you take me down, you're all going with me!" director Walter screamed like a madman.

"You moron! This base is right below a highly populated city! The explosion will wipe the city out!" Liam panicked.

"Then I guess you better start shutting down the self destruct sequence," the director cackled as he broke free from the circle that we formed around him and ran out of the room.

"I should be able to shut it down if I can get to the main computer," Max assured.

"I can fly you to the computer," I added.

"Delilah and Liam can fight off any agents that get in your way and I'll go after the director," Derek added.

"By yourself? Are you crazy?" I asked. There was no way I could let him do this.

"Possibly," he smirked, "Trust me, I can take care of myself out there."

"You're so dumb," I replied

"What.....?" he asked.

"You're really the dumbest person I know Derek, but I'm not going to stop you. This is a dangerous, stupid idea but I'm not going to stop you. Just please, please promise me that you'll be safe," I replied and he smirked.

"I promise," he responded before he hugged me tightly then ran out of the room. I picked Max up and I started to fly to the head computer as Liam and Delilah followed behind me, fighting off any agents who got in my way. I made it to the head computer as Delilah put a purple force field around the computer and us. Max began typing frantically into the computer. Eventually, even the agents who were fighting us began to flee. The countdown until the beautiful, unsuspecting city explodes moved what seemed like faster than an olympic runner. Suddenly, the screen turned green and Max let out a sigh of relief.

"I did it!" He celebrated. Delilah took down the force field and the government base seemed empty. Where was everyone? Where was Derek? We all ran outside to find all of the agents in an aircraft. Derek was running to catch up with it.

"Derek we stopped the self destruct you don't have to chase them!" I screamed, trying to get his attention. He turned around and saw me. He paused for a moment then narrowed his eyes and jumped onto the space craft. The aircraft took flight and I tried my best to fly after it. Once the got far enough from the city and far enough from me, Derek took opened the gas cap and lit a match. "No!" I screamed. He said nothing as he threw the match in and the aircraft exploded with all of the agents, the director, and him. He was gone. "No!" I cried as tears fell frantically down my face. He couldn't have left me! He made a promise! I flew back down to my team as Max hugged me.

"I'm so sorry," was all he could say. The only words he could form. I didn't care. I didn't care about anything. Anything except revenge. The revenge would have to wait a while though, until I could find out who started the government superhero program and who put director Walter in charge. They will regret that day. They will regret the sacrifice they caused Derek to make, but that day will have to wait.

"What are we going to do now?" Delilah asked.

"Become real heroes just like our parents would have wanted. It's time this city had a savior " I replied in a serious tone.
