Chapter Four

I sat on the edge of my bed, my heart hammering in my chest as my wolf cowered and whined within my mind. The rain had picked up again and stray branches scratched across my window as I stared down at my dark red toenails.

I had walked into a trap, one I couldn't escape unless it meant leaving with a man who had been mated to one of my closest friends. Goddess, how do I get out of this? I ran my hands through my hair sniffing hard. My phone had been taken, lest I communicate with any of my wolf friends. I couldn't even contact Ella – had she known this was going to happen?

Mary had sat with me for a while, trying to calm me down but she was almost as furious as I was. My eyes hurt from crying so hard and my nose continuously dripped. What was I supposed to do now? How did I get myself out of this?

I should have stayed at Brown, I told myself for the thousandth time. I knew I shouldn't have come back. My father had wanted me gone, yet when it suited him he had brought me back. Ordered me back.

I hated him.

"We're going to get out of this," my wolf whined. Her words were half-hearted though. Deep down the Alpha command was weighing on her heavily and she was finding it exhausting to resist. "I will not lose the chance to meet our true mate."

"I will make them regret it," I told her. "They will regret ever having tried doing this to me."

I got up and stared outside knowing that if I could shift I could get out of here. He had taken that from me though, my only means of a proper escape. I must have paced for hours, trying to figure out a way to get out of the compound that was so heavily guarded. Every patrolling wolf would be on alert, knowing I would be going through fight or flight scenarios. Anyone who knew me would know where my mind was at this time.

By the time the sun came up it was still raining, and I was no closer to a plan to get out of here. My feet were cold and the dress was uncomfortable yet I couldn't bring myself to change. Changing meant I accepted this and I wasn't going down without a fight.

I would make Alpha Dean's life hell; I'd make him change his mind.

I heard movement within the house and I stilled, trying to listen. The feet sounded like Brennan and shortly after my father stirred. The rest of the house then woke together and I heard taps running and teeth being brushed.

I went back and sat on my bed knowing it was just a matter of time before somebody came to me.

Someone came through the front door, no, two people. Mary and Polly. Polly went straight to the kitchen as always but I heard Mary climbing the stairs, stopping outside my door.

"Alpha Dean," she said, sounding surprised. "Ah, good morning."

"Good morning Mary. I assume you're checking in on Charlotte."

"Yeah..." she said quietly. Suddenly my door opened and Mary slipped through the crack, shutting it behind her. "Oh Charlotte," she said sadly. "You look awful."

"Mary, you have to-"

She put her finger to her lips, gesturing to the door. I looked down at the floor and noticed a shadow. Was he really going to listen to our conversation? "We need to get you showered and dressed, you look awful and you can't be comfortable."

"My flight leaves at noon," I said loudly. "I'm going back to Brown."

"Charlotte..." Mary's voice was weak. "Your father-"
