Night in the Forest

The sun sets.

Moonrise over the dark forest.

The owl hoots a greeting.

The wolf howls a greeting.

The forest greets the moon.

Others sleep.

Want to rest for the coming day.

Chickadee, woodpecker, cardinal,

Birdsong is hushed at night.

But for the owl, night is day.

She searches for food in the night.

Finds a mouse, brings it to her hungry chicks.

They wait. Soon they will fly, too.

The wolf pack is not sleeping yet.

The leader begins the song.

The air is filled with the music of wolves

Pups yipping, their untrained yowls breaking the melodious tune

They'll learn.

When the sun again rises, the moon says goodbye,

the wolf pups awake and the owlets sleep,

the birdsong is once again ringing through the trees,

there is no sign of the night before.
