Prompt:

"Is that a dead body?"

"Maybe?"

"It is. I can see it right in front of me."

"I promise I'll clean it up before dinner!"

Before even opening the front door, Lena could already predict what was about to happen

Before even opening the front door, Lena could already predict what was about to happen. The petite woman sighed deeply and pushed the front door open just enough for her to slide through without showing the entire neighbourhood what was going on in the quaint two-story, three bedroom house.

Even though Lena was used to this happening, the smell of rust always hit her like a freight train. Her best friend, Ren, had done something bad again. Lena went into the guestroom, which wasn't much of a guestroom anymore, and saw the blood before she saw... the body? She looked at Ren in confusion, who grimaced in response and turned his back to Lena.

"Is that a dead body?"

"Maybe?"

"It is. I can see it right in front of me."

"I promise to clean it up before dinner!"

Ren motioned Lena out of the room, revealing the slumped body in the plastic yard chair and just how much blood had been split this time around. Before Lena could protest, the blond-haired man slammed the door shut.

"Ren, I swear to God! I want the full story on how you ended up killing someone in our guestroom!" Lena pounded on the door. She could hear Ren's low chuckle and sighed loudly in defeat.

Lena was a medical student, so dead bodies didn't bother her much, but what bothered her was that Ren typically didn't kill people. Apart from being a journalist, Lena had found out that Ren was also a "freelance interrogator" as Ren coined it, a job he did on the side for extra cash. He did jobs for local crime lords in exchange for a shot at the front page of the papers with an article on organised crime.

Turning on the radio, Lena started preparing dinner, deciding on salmon with green beans and jasmine rice. Lena hummed softly to the newest Ariana Grande song, occasionally checking on the rice, and hoping that the smell of rust wouldn't continue to assault her senses for another week like last time. Secretly, Lena hoped that the smell of pan-fried salmon and jasmine rice would linger in the house long enough for the smell of rust to diminish.

"Dinner smells great, Lena!" Ren shouted across the bottom floor of the house.

"Shut up and clean up your mess, Renwick Keaton!" Lena shouted back. She wasn't too pleased with the whole situation. How the hell does one get rid of a body that was killed in their house? Lena rolled her eyes and started cleaning the green beans that she had picked up from the farmer's market before walking into the mess that had become her home.

Close to an hour later, Lena had showered, put on her comfiest sweat pants and one of Ren's long sleeved shirts that swallowed her whole, and was almost done preparing dinner. was currently heating up the rice and green beans in the oven and was waiting for the salmon to finish cooking.

"I called a connection to get rid of the body, it's going to be out of our hands now. I'm sorry if walking in on a body upset you. I know you typically see the aftermath of my, uh, questioning but I may have pushed a bit too hard today." Ren smiled shyly at Lena who was glaring at Ren from the corner of her eye.

"Look, Ren, I'm not upset at the body, I'm a med student and I already did an anatomy bachelor, I see dead bodies all the time, sadly enough. I'm upset at the fact that you feel obligated to do that to get good stories to fight for a chance on getting onto the front page. What you're doing is unethical and illegal! I don't want to lose you by any means!" Lena rarely got emotional, she had always been that way. She took the salmon out of the pan and placed the fillets on the plates, before taking the rice and green beans out of the oven and served it.

"I know you're upset Lena, but I can't exactly cut ties with these guys, I'm in too deep," Ren explained, taking a plate from Lena's outstretched hand. Lena's face remained almost blank, the tiniest hint of emotion showing in her deep brown eyes.

"I don't care, I mean, you're my best friend! I care for you too much! I love you so much that if you were taken away from me, I don't know what I'll do. Ren, you helped me through so many dark times in my life that I almost need you to live, to breathe. I want you by my side." Ren put his plate back down on the counter top and did the same to Lena's, before wrapping the smaller woman into a bone crushing bear hug.

"I want you by my side as well, Lena, trust me on that. Who's going to be your wingman everytime we have to go to those parties your classmates invite you to and you can't say no? Who's going to mock you for knowing every single word to every The Greatest Showman songs? I'm not leaving you. I love you, Lena, more than I can handle. I'm so sorry if I hurt you in any way, Lena. I'll try and distance myself from these crime lords if that's what you want." Lena could feel Ren's heart thud loudly in his chest.

"Thank you, Ren, that means a lot to me. How did you end up killing the guy, anyway?"
