DEREK'S PERSPECTIVE
"Amy, what do you mean, this surgery can't be done? We've been planning it for weeks! YOU are the one who said it has an 80% success rate! I don't care! I'm booking your plane ticket right now. You are coming to Grey Sloan, and either telling the girls that you can't do the surgery, and they will be very disappointed, or you can take that risk, and do it. I also have someone for you to meet too. So you better get out here, because I told him every good part about you. Okay?". I sigh, arguing with my favourite sister is very tiresome.
"Hey Mer, do you want some ice chips?". I ask.
"Yeah, that would be nice. Thanks. Who was that?". She asks as I walk out to ask the nurse to get ice chips.
"Uh, just my sister. " I say.
"Which sister. Because two if them I like, and two I hate. " She said.
"That was Amy. She's supposed to be coming out here for a case, but hen she had a feeling that it would be too risky, so she was going to cancel it, but she still has to come out here to look at the updated scans and see the patients. "
"Okay. She can cook, right?".
"Oh Mer. Of course. Well, I know she can bake, I honestly have no clue if she can cook. I'm sure she can. " I assured her.
MEREDITH'S PERSPECTIVE
my phone rings.
I look at the caller ID, surprised.
"Hi Mum. Why are you calling? I haven't heard from you in over four years. " I said.
"Hi, is this Meredith Grey?" this woman, who is bit my mother says.
"Yes, this is Meredith Grey. How can I help you?". I say.
"Your mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She keeps asking for you and this man called Richard. Do you know who Richard is?". The woman asks.
"Yes. I do know who Richard is. My mother and him had an affair when I was younger. Thank you for letting me know. Will she be moved to a facility near Seattle?". I ask.
"I'm sorry, Ms Grey, but your mother is already in Seattle. She received her diagnosis from Seattle Presbyterian. I'm sure you knew that. " She said.
"I think I would know if my mother was in Seattle. But thank you for letting me know Ma'am. I'll visit her sometime soon. " I said.
"Thank you. I'll let her know that you'll visit soon. By Meredith. "
"Bye. " I say, clicking my phone shut, with a sour expression spreading across my face. Derek looks at me with worry all over his face.
"Who was that? And why did you say Mother, then it all changed. You seemed more surprised when you changed from when you saw it was your mother to the other person. What's wrong?" he asks.
"It's my mother. She was diagnosed at Seattle Pres with Alzheimer's. It's gotten worse. I have to go visit her sometime. "
"Oh Mer. I had no idea. Why didn't you tell me that your mother had Alzheimer's? I might be able to do something. " Derek says.
"You can't. She hasn't called in over five years. The last time was when I graduated Grad school. She called to say how disappointed she was that I was going to become a surgeon. She wanted me to be extraordinary, and not ordinary." I said.
"Meredith, you are anything but ordinary. I can not believe your- actually, I can picture your mother saying that. Sorry to ask, but how did your mother know Richard?".
I look at him like he had three heads. "My mother is Ellis Grey. Need I explain more?". I say, like it's so obvious. "Ellis and Richard were a thing during their resident years. My father, Thatcher Grey, went off when I was five and started a new family. Then Lexie became a surgeon, and she died in the crash. And our sister, Molly, and their mother, Susan Grey died if hiccups! And it was me, Dr Bailey and Richard in there fixing her! Thatcher slapped me when I told him. And he got so pissed again, and things got out of control. Please, just let me eat my ice chips and talk about our kids. How're they?". I ask.
"They're fine. Emilia, Bailey, Zola and Katie are all missing you. They want to see their momma. And I'm sure you want to see them too. " Derek says.
"I do, I just can't deal with it right now. I need you. Can Cristina and Alex take the kids again?". I ask, suddenly very tired.
"Yeah, if course. I love you, Meredith Grey. " Derek says.
"I love you too Derek Shepard. " I say back, with a smile spreading across my face.
