"DEAD." He said.

And I heard a sob,

Above me, somewhere, in the mob--

Of those around my flesh and bones,

Weeping,sighing, in hushed tones.

His stethoscope brushed my breast,

As he replaced it to his chest.

Gently, gently, he closed my eyes,

Then, man of cloth knelt by my side...

Sign of the cross, then something wet--

A child spoke: "...holy water, I'll bet!"

Last rites. A prayer. Then whisked away,

No more to see the light of day.

Inside a bag...in frigid box--

I heard the ticks. I heard the tocks...

The wall-clock, o'er top the place,

Where I lay still, in blood and lace.

It seemed Eternity had past,

When suddenly freed from bonds, at last--

By someone whom I did not know.

He took my clothes! My pretty bow!

"Autopsy," said double-chin.

The other muttered I was too thin.

They chatted about the accident:

Me. The car (had not one dent!)

Ah! The Wreck! Then i remembered:

My blind date! Oh September's--

Gentle breeze as sun did set,

Young love ensnared in Death's Net...

As moon hung sentinel to First Kiss,

Its nearness enraptured me with bliss...

Consummation:

A gentle bite...

Upon my neck!

Then I saw lights...

Reflectors on the guardrails, glared,

The tires squealed, the radio blared.

We spun once..., or twice..., or thrice...

My date was fine.

Me?

Bagged & iced!

As apprentice stood, knife in hand,

To incise me at Chief's command,

My stomach growled a startling growl!

I leapt upon him as wolf on sow...

And Bit him! Bit him! Without regard...

His neck snapped, and he fell, hard.

"DEAD!" Gasped the Chief M.E.,

"...You-you're dead!" Again, cried he--

As he ran from one point to another,

And when he cried out for his mother...

I lunged at him with realized glee--

"DEAD?" I said,

"Dead?  Oh, no!

       Not

           ME!"
