A German doctor named Carl Tanzler once fell in love with a patient called Elena Milagro de Hoyos. After she died of tuberculosis, he took her body from her tomb. Her skin had already decayed, so he attached her bones together with wire and replaced her skin with silk cloth. After that, he hid her in her bed. He used perfume to hide the smell of her dead body. He was only caught when somebody saw him dancing with the corpse in front of his front window. He was arrested in 1940, but received no charges due the statute of limitations expiring. He freely lived with the body of Elena Milagro de Hoyos until the day he died.
