My Bride

The scars under my skin, our vows hold me together.
The leaves below my pillow are now burnt yellow.
Do your remember our vows?

I walk by the meadow rivers just to find your face in the waters.
Here in Vietnam, war is getting fierce, seventy men died yesterday.
And I fear I might lose you too, the blood of a thousand ghosts,
breathe against my arm and
Break my soul, and I'm growing delirious without you.

It's been four years, and I haven't seen your face.
and the sight of you still standing on that staircase
is fading.

The night of prom, your silk dress stood like the New York night.
The blonde streaks in your red hair,
and your mercury silver eyes shamed the stars.
Your laughter was a song to my  heart.

It'll only be month till I come home,
and I"ll see your beautiful face again.
On the fields of war my heart is dry,
Like a night of alcohol, I am ruined.

As I step onto the shores of our country,
I write in the sand, anxious to hold you in my
arms and see you, my beloved bride.
