Chapter 2

As Kai laid sleep on the floor she writhed, twisted and turned. It wasn’t because she was uncomfortable, although the pallet that she made for herself on the hardwood flooring was unbearable, but it was because of a dream. The same dream she had been having for the last two years…

“I love you Zoe,” Cassander whispered softly in my ear.

The feel of his warm breath on my skin sent shivers down my spine. I gripped onto his swollen muscles, trying to get my footing without making a complete fool of myself. It was always like this when I was around Cassander. He made it so easy for me to become a fool that I had to work harder than before not to. He did something to me… something wonderful.

I looked around the holding cell that we were locked in. I could hear the sounds of metal clanking against metal, the grunts of men and the screams of women, and the constant humming of magical energy. Luckily, I couldn’t see past the solid concrete walls and door. I don’t think I would’ve been able to handle both seeing and hearing the destruction going on beyond these walls.

I was connected to everything around me. Being a Fey meant that I was one with nature and everything that comes from it. I could feel the pain of my people fighting for my parents, Cassander and I. I could hear their wishes for the little Princess’ safety and that I bless them on their journey to the next life. I could feel walls exploding, wood burning, fire spreading and people, my people, all of my people dying.

Tears burnt my eyes, threatening to fall and make me out to be as weak as I felt. I knew I needed to be strong, stronger than I could be. I knew Cassander was already worrying about my parents and friends, so the last thing he needed was to worry about me too. I had to put on a brave face and block out all of the noises and feelings. I had to try and forget the pain that radiated through my body at every blow.

Zoe, a voice called.

There was an eerie breeze that blew by as my Mother’s essences floated in front of me. Her body was battered and bruised; her hair was tossed and matted. Tears streaked her beautiful, dimpled cheeks. It was as I took in her appearance that I knew something was wrong.

Mother?

I couldn’t help the slight whimper that escaped my mouth. I had never seen my Mother look so sad. The sadness was radiating off of her in droves, staggering me with its strength. There was only one thing that could affect my Mother this bad…

Father? I asked. Deep down I had known the answer before I had watched her head shake with the answer. I swallowed my tears for my Mother’s sake. I’d cry in Cassander’s arms later. I am sure he fought bravely then.

He did… Zoe, I don’t have much time. I’m so sorry we couldn’t do a lot more together. It is likely that you and Cassander will not make it through the night. I have prayed to the Goddess. You and Cassander will meet again, she rapidly explained.

I didn’t hold the tears back once I realized what this was. It was my Mother’s goodbye to me. I’d never see her or my Father again. I wouldn’t make it through the night, which meant that the Fey would most likely die out without a Royal, but at the moment that wasn’t what I cared about. The only thing that was important to me was the man in my arms.
