She's a 17 year old girl who was born in the fire nation. When she was 6, Her parents fled from the fire nation because they were fugitives for sabotaging their boats and camps. They fled with her to the small water tribe in the South Pole where they thought they would be safe but the fire soldiers killed her parents not knowing they had a daughter.
The water tribe took in Aya and raised her as their own until she discovered she was a fire bender. Her pale white skin didn't belong in water tribe clothing and the tribe grow cautious around her. But a family took her in and tried to teach her how to control her fire bending but she never had gain complete control. So she tries to not use her fire bending near her village.
Now she practices every day to try and get better. She was always known as the outcast in her village but that all changed when her and her two friends found the avatar.
