Another rebellion is coming. The civil unrest rumbling throughout the major cities of Alluum is only one of the problems that we had to face during one of our “free” summers. The couriers have the problem under control. For now.

Five hundred years is nothing to an elf. I have lived lifetimes, but I have never seen the country in such unrest. We are teetering on the edge of a civil war. The last time we faced a war was a hundred years ago, when we fought against the necromancers to beat them back into their place. Only, "we" no longer seems to include Evercrest's students or alumni; the public suddenly believes we have too much power, and I'm not going to disagree. We run the nation for the monarchs and get away with killing whoever we want.

I'd be afraid of us too.

I sink back into the one comfortable chair in my penthouse. This is the most relaxation I'm going to get this summer. A smile tugs at my lips. When sitting in my big red chair, getting drunk and brooding over a depressing reality is considered "relaxation," it is a sad day indeed.

“Cheers to that, Constance,” I tell myself. “You're gonna need it.”
