Chapter Twenty-Seven

Andrzej came to a screeching halt with a look that clearly said "what the hell". "What did you just say?"

"We'll talk about it later. We need to go." As I led the way down the hall I couldn't help but say, "I hope they don't mind if we commandeer a golf cart."

"Tally, I think we're going to need something faster."

Just as Cecil said that, I felt Andrzej's muscles shift under my grip. I really didn't want to look back so I just walked a tad faster, knowing if we didn't time this right, he would be wolfing out in the wrong place.

"I don't know how to get him there faster..."

"I have a rental in the lot," Cecil said. "Thankfully I grabbed my keys. You'll have to tell me where I'm going though."

"Didn't they give you GPS?" Andrzej said. "I'm sure you can afford it."

His tone was snippy but thankfully Cecil didn't say anything back, probably sensing the same thing I did. As long as we kept Andrzej calm or as close to it as possible, he wouldn't shift until the sun fell below the horizon.

"Is this it?" Cecil asked.

For the moment I wasn't questioning why I could talk to him. I didn't realize I was doing it until we were in the car and I was spouting directions at him. Whatever the reason, I was at the point where I wouldn't question it. After all, why look a gifted horse in the mouth. Maybe it would bite me in the butt later, but right now I was enjoying it.

"I think so."

It was a little coral colored house hidden behind some miniature palm trees and a white fence. As Cecil pulled into the driveway, we discovered the white fence continued over the driveway, blocking the rest of the way with a huge wooden gate.

"Shit," I muttered. "Maybe it's not."

From the back seat, Andrzej shifted so his arm hung over my seat and his fingers rested on my shoulder. His head was right next to mine between the seats as he looked out the windshield, contemplating the obstacle in our path.

"This is the right place." His voice had become way gravelly, almost as if he'd swallowed rocks and they were rumbling around in his voice box to allow him to speak. "I can feel it."

His fingers started stroking the bare skin of my shoulder and I very carefully moved away from them. Unfortunately that brought me closer to his face.

"Do you know the code for the gate then?" I asked, bending my head away so I wouldn't be as close to his wolf breath as I was. It smelled exactly how a dog's would and I checked the urge to ask him if he wanted a breath mint.

"There is no code." He moved his face close to mine and strangely enough, sniffed me. "But I know how to open it."

Cecil put the car in park and sighed. "Then you might want to go open it because your sideburns are getting bushier by the second."

"Well aren't we getting territorial?" Andrzej flashed him a cold wolfish grin. Even his teeth were pointier. "Hate to tell you, wonder boy, but the wonder girl is already spoken for. Probably should've stepped up to the plate sooner."

"What?" I could literally feel all the blood drain out of my face and when he disappeared from between the seats, I instinctively looked around my seat at him. "What are you talking about?"

Andrzej didn't say anything, just opened the door and hopped out, leaving Cecil and I staring after him.

"What does he mean?" I asked Cecil. "Do you know?"
