                                         prologue

‘’Hey scraggly’’ said Jake. Jake was a jock (at least he thought he was), and being a jock he felt the need to pick on someone, me, just like everyone else at this school does. Living in America has been hell for me, right from the start. When I moved here from England four years ago, I was going through a awkward stage of growing my hair, and that earned me the nickname Scraggly. I decided to ignore Jake, and made my way to English.

When I arrived in the room, Miss Haxton was handing out last week’s test paper. I was in for it, but not because I did badly, but because I probably did well. You see, I am a so called nerd, so whenever I get a good grade, everyone chants “Gabby’s a nerd, Gabby’s a nerd”. It really plays on your mind. So as a 14 year old freshman, I am at the bottom of the popularity list of my high school.

I was never classed a nerd at my old school in England, I had friends, and then BAM! What happens when your Dad gets a job in America, you and your family have to go live there?  Miss Haxton just handed me my paper back, and here we go, I’ve got an A* and Jake saw my grade. Better get ready for the chanting.

At last I am home, English was worse than I thought. I watch TV for about two hours after diligently doing my homework (those A* don’t come that easy), and then my Mum (I still don’t say Mom after four years in America) came into the room. “How was school honey?” said Mum

“Okay, same as usual really, me and Izzy done same as always” I said not going into detail. My parents don’t know I get picked on at school, so I made up a fake friend named Izzy. This could be awkward, as whenever we had a family party, or I had a birthday, they’d say ‘oh, why don’t you invite Izzy?’.

Then I would have to create elaborate excuses about why she couldn’t come. My parents never got suspicious about this, (they must be really naive as ‘Izzy’ couldn’t come three consecutive years in a row, or ever come to my house). The front door just banged, my Dad must be in. He came into the room and said “hi Gabby, how was school?” (Parents are so nosy about what happened at school) “Fine” I said, (yet again not going into detail)

“Hey, why don’t we go out for dinner tonight?” asked my dad. My Dad was acting strange, considering he loves my Mums cooking.

“Yeah sure, can we go to Valanni pizza?”

“Ah, good choice my little girl, Valanni pizza is the best restaurant in the whole state of Philadelphia” said Dad (he was right, it is the best restaurant).

After a great meal, (I had the pizza special) my Dad spoke up. “Gabby, your Mum and I want to tell you something.”

“Uh huh” I said whilst eating my chocolate ice cream

“Well my I have got a new job in England” Did my dad just say that?

“What?” I said

“So, we have to move back to England, I am so sorry Gabby, I know you have friends here” my Dad said, Anyway why was he sorry, I couldn’t wait to leave America!

“ Me and Izzy will have to have a long distance friendship” I said , I had kept up the Izzy story for almost four years , so I wasn’t going to let it go down the drain now!

“Wow honey, your taking it better than last time” said my mum, well that’s because I actually had friends then.

“I have matured with age Mum” I said with a duh tone.

For once in my life something good had happened, I am going home to England, and I can’t wait!!!!!!!!
