Flashing Lights

Flashing lights

Shooting stars

Cold air licking against cold skin

Rain pattering onto the pavement

A sorrowful song thick in the air

A prayer in my heart

Thick on my tongue

Metal coating my mouth and splintering into my bones

Shredding cartilage and decimating dreams, hopes, lives but never love and never memories

Clothes damp as the chill began to sink in

Ears ringing above the deathly silence

Screaming to hear something other than the haunting white noise

A familiar voice, a familiar face

There was nothing.

Nothing but the spinning world.

Moving, rocking as my soul climbed higher

Higher

Higher as my body descended six feet into the earth

Gasping, wheezing, choking as silver chains sunk into me

Breathing became harder as I told myself this wasn't it.

There was more

Lights flashed in the distance

Bright lights that shone like stars

I was ascending

Rising even as I clung to the cold streets and begged for warmth

The moon was watching, the stars blinking, the sun waiting

Was this it?

I was light and heavy, living but...

No, this wasn't it

I told myself this wasn't it, even as I felt my life's essence ooze from me.

My body was heavy like lead

But my mind was sharp even as it struggled for oxygen

My stomach spasmed as my heart pumped furiously

Lights blazed in the distance

Blue and red as my red smeared upon black

The sky hung over me like a heavy blanket

Watching me languidly as a meteor shot across the sky

I tried to fight it, to breathe through the inevitability because this wasn't it

But it was

Pale light stretched out to me

Welcoming me into its holy gates

Blinding light yanked me away from the endless darkness

The screeching noises

Pulse sinking and flatlining into the pale gold abyss

Another name

Another child

Another star disappearing into the endless bitter night

A life lost to the cold streets as blue and red flashed against the pretty city lights.

This is just something that came to me while I was at work and thought to share it with you guys.

The song Selah by Emile Sandé and all the recent murders in London were the inspiration behind it.
